Memories of Another Blue & Gold Car

Stock Car Racing History

TMC, The first Pinewood Derby held in my home town (66 or 67) was my last year in Cub Scouts. I wanted to build my car by my self and being our first time out I did not know all the trick things that made a car fast but it was sharp. Shaped like a midget car and painted blue with a #4 on it like dad's race car, even got a ribbon for Best Appearing. Then can race time, mine was the last to leave the gate, it just did make it down the incline before a wheel feel off and it stopped half way along the flat part of the track. Never made it to the finish. I had to go collect the pieces alone while everyone else was at the finish line. My first personal experience with loosing a race, yuck! Dad was as embarrassed as I was, maybe more so when you here the rest of the story.

The next year I was a Boy Scout and my brother, Keith stepped up to represent the family in the Derby. This time dad helped build the car. Even built a track in the basement to test on. Shaped like a wedge and painted to look like the STP turbine car #40. It was fast too. Won the first race and kept right on winning all the way to the State Title. Went right far in the Nationals as well but I can't remember how far he got. Keith did help build the car but dad made sure there was not a repeat of my performance.

Now you are just trying to make me feel bad. Not only did I make it easy, I got it wrong LOL. The article I saw had it as 248, anyway he led a lot :) This is where I wish I knew how to put up one of those smiley faces that is winking at you.

What I found interesting was John Holman never commented on what he was looking for. Now I got to change these things up a little, PKL is making this too easy. I thought when I posted it that you or Dave would answer, both of you are Goggle Masters :)

And that's right Bill, many a time the guy that lead the most laps but did not finish took home more money than most finishers. Only 16 cars finished that day so Richard's finishing position shows how hooked up he was that day.

Stock Car Racing History

Cale Yarborough continued his winning ways and won the 1968 Virginia 500 at Martinsville in a Mercury followed by David Pearson, Donnie Allison and Lee Roy Yarbrough - all in Fords - and Tiger Tom Pistone in another Mercury. Little Bud Moore in a Dodge was sixth and the first car to the finish not powered by a blue oval engine.

Total Ford domination, right? Well not quite, you see Richard Petty led 248 laps before falling out with rear end trouble and was protested after the race. That's right, he did not finish, but was still protested.

Who made the protest and what was the result?

1968 Grand Touring Trivia

Stock Car Racing History

That is right Dave. The Tarheel 250 originally scheduled for Oct. 12th was postponed because of rain and was then rianed out the next weekend as well. As no suitable date for staging the event remained on the NASCAR calendar, the race was cancelled and Lund declared the winner of the points title. The one thing I do not agree with as stated in the article is that Tiny backed into the title. He missed one of the 19 races, I think because of a Grand National race, and won 9 of the 18 events he entered in Bud Moores' Mercury Cougar. If that is backing into a title I would hate to see what domination looked like.

1968 Grand Touring Trivia

Stock Car Racing History

The inaugural season for the Grand Touring division was 1968. In a year full of first Tiny Lund had by far the most. First place in the first race held at Rockingham N.C in the Sandhill 250 from the pole. Tiny had the most wins for the season at 9 which included the last 3 in a row that started at Darlington, then Augusta and North Wilkesboro. When they left North Wilkesboro Tiny had the point lead with one race remaining and was in a tight battle with Buck Baker and Jack Ryan. Tiny was later declared the winnner of the points title by 30 points over Baker without the last scheduled event ever taking place.

What was that event and why was it not held?

Rockingham Rookies

Stock Car Racing History

Dave, Don't know if there was any relation to the J.M. Long in the article but there was a "Knock" Long that was a partner in the old Rockingham Speedway dirt track that is in the photo above.
