Nashville Superspeedway off the NASCAR schedule

General

I agree with most everyone here about this not being unforeseen. But, and I may be wrong, but I don't see why ISC or SMI would be a buyer of the superspeedway. In the other instances of a speedway conglomerate purchasing a racetrack it was basically because they wanted to transfer the track's race dates to one of the other tracks in their "portfolio", or as in Bruton & Kentucky Speedway's case, move a race date from one their under performing tracks to one that is fertile for a sellout. The race dates at the Nashville Superspeedway are not highly sought after (actually not sought at all), and I don't think someone else can come in and fill up the seats at that track unless they wanted to transfer one of their existing cup dates to Nashville (I'm being optimistic when I say "not likely"). Too Much Country nailed it in regards to the Fair Board. I do still hold out hope that the old Fairgrounds could get one or both series, but lets just say the politics over here are not too race friendly right now. Too Much Country, say hey to the King up at Dover!

Nashville Superspeedway off the NASCAR schedule

General

Here's to hoping that Nascar will consider bringing one or both of the series (heck bring back Cup too!) from the Superspeedway to the historic 5/8's Nashville Fairgrounds Speedway.

From earlier this morning concerning Nashville Superspeedway--

Question of the Day for March 31, 2011 Local Short Tracks

General

My local short track is the Nashville Fairgrounds Speedway-- still no word on whether they'll have racing this year. I was lucky enough to grow up going to the Fairgrounds during the great racing era of the 70's & 80's, and my recollections of the perfect show was when they ran 3 divisions (mini stock, cadets, and late model). For those not familiar with the Fairgrounds Speedway, they have a .596 track with a 1/4 track within it-- 2 tracks in 1! Mini stocks and cadets ran the 1/4 mile track and then when they rolled the late models out for the big track you knew the "main event" was about to start. Most tracks I've attended recently fall into exactly what Dave Fulton previously posted-- "WAY TOO MANY DIVISIONS, WAY TOO FEW CARS. There is no reason on earth to subject fans to more than a MAXIMUM OF 3 DIVISIONS".

1971 Nashville 420,July 24.

General

HR, I'm not sure there was any television coverage of the '71 Nashville 420. Seems like I've seen copies of the '70 race on ebay from time to time though. If you locate a copy of the '71 race (or the '70 race) and they can duplicate another copy then have the supplier contact me too thru the send message on my D. Mudd RacersReunion page. The 1971 race was the first Grand National race I attended as a kid, and I would love to have a copy of it!

Historic speedways.

Historic Speedways and Ghost Tracks

Thanks Randy. I love that racetrack. Basically grew up out there on Saturday nights back in the 70's. Place oozes with history-- Waltrip, Coo Coo and Sterling Marlin, Dave Sisco, Alexander family, James Ham, Flookie Buford, some guy named Charlie Binkley, the Petty's, Allisons, Gant, Lindley, Ingram, Ard, Ottinger, Red Farmer, Marty Robbins (which BTW if you haven't already done so you need to go back and listen to one of this sites Racin Through History radio archive shows on Marty Robbins- http://www.racersreunionradio.com/archive_detail.php?archive_id=266 ). Lets hope the Fair Board gives someone a long term lease.

If Nascar ran the NFL......

General

...would the Green Bay Packers still be in Green Bay, or would they now be the Vegas or Fontana Packers? I miss North Wilkesboro, Rockingham, the Labor Day race at Darlington........

January 19 - This day in NASCAR and Petty history

Stock Car Racing History

Nice. And I remember the Petty blue on the #43 sharing space with a lot of day-glow STP red on the car. I was a new fan to the sport back then, but best I remember prior to the Petty/STP deal was that most of the drivers' cars were painted with their own team colors (or maybe whatever cans of spare paint were available) and the sponsor's name just painted on the hood or rear quarter panel (Petty/blue, B. Allison/red & gold, Langley/green, Isaac/red, Cecil Gordon/yellow, Jabe Thomas/red & gold, etc.). Was this the first time that a nascar sponsor actually dictated car color and paint scheme?

Nashville Fairgrounds Speedway update

General

Here is a link to one of our local television stations report of last night's speedway/council meeting. The beginning of the story is about last night, but if you go down a little deeper in the story you will see the part about "E-mails Reveal Fair Board, Mayor's Office Communication". This is the battle-- the director of the fair board is more loyal to the mayor than to the preservation of the fairgrounds.

And thanks to everyone's interest over here at the RacersReunion, and for the coverage on Monday's Motorweek LIVE! broadcast.
