Dick Hutcherson

Stock Car Racing History

Hi, Hutch - I saw your dad race several times...........Daytona, Atlanta, etc. I don't remember all the details, but I never saw him drive anything but Fords (Holman/Moody, I believe). I do remember that he was very good and usually among the frontrunners. Ibelieve I saw him drive a NASCAR dirt track race in Valdosta, GA, in the mid-'60s (Cale Yarborough's 1st NASCAR win). He was one of the real racers, always very competitive. I wish we had more like him in today's racing.

Someone describe the Nascar word P R O B A T I O N

Current NASCAR

I will address this issue, although I am sure very inadequately, in The Legendtorial Tuesday night. Agree with me or not, what was done, and yet to be done, to Richard Childress, is wrong when the perpetrator walks gloatingly away with his crooked smirk because once again he has thumbed his more than adequate nose at authority. As badly as his parents failed, NASCAR is failing as miserably. A disgrace.
As you said to PK, Tim, I have the utmost respect for your opinions, experience, and knowledge of the sport of stock car racing - I will say, however, that if there were not some interesting "characters" involved in the sport, we would only have a garage full of "nice guys" and "robots"...............and it would probably become a very boring environment.

Childress Punches Kyle Busch?

General

I am not defending either Kyle or Richard in this situation - not taking sides, as I believe both of them are very good at what they do. I do not believe the slight contact between Kyle and Coulter on the track after the truck race is what caused the situation - I believe it goes back further than that and involves more than justthat single incident. Regardless of what caused it or what the final outcome is, this is another example of the type of publicity that NASCAR needs in order to put more warm bodies in the grandstand seats. Since we now live in the "information technology" age, this is a whole different environment compared to the early - and even middle - years of stock car racing. A good example is the fact that someone had already "twittered", "tweeted", or whatever they call it, to someone regarding the confrontation before either Kyle or Richard even got back to their motorhomes. The fact is that this type of situation actually occurred all too frequently "back in the day". I guess there aren't that many of us still around who remember drivers like Lee Petty, Curtis Turner, and more recently the "Man in Black", plusseveral others who weren't shy at all when it came to contact with other drivers on the track..........and I suspect that many disagreements were settled behind the garages or out of view of the cameras. I have personally witnessed similar situations at NASCAR-sanctioned dirt tracks (several years ago)......theneveryone would go onto the next track the next weekend and resume their competition. It was just a part of the environment . Today, it gets blown all out of proportion and becomes a huge deal. I'm certainly not advocating that disagreementsbe settled by physically fighting with each other...........but it might benefit NASCAR to go back and take a look at a simpler bygone era of the sport - back when most NASCAR races were sellouts - and figure outsome of the things that attracted fans to the race tracks.

Childress Punches Kyle Busch?

General

Christopher Krul said:
First a speeding ticket, now this. Hes not going to look too good in court. My take, I am surprised this has not happened sooner. The one thing I cannot stand is how Kyle just uses the Nationwide Series and Truck Series to beat around others. Then when he cannot win, he pulls these cheapshots after a race and throws tantrums when he cannot win. Whats pathetic is he was all upset over finishing 5th. He cannot win em all and even if he won in the Truck Series, hes not running for the Championship and no one would care anyways. The other thing I cannot stand is Kyle races rough and yet when someone races him just as rough in return he is a big baby about it. Childress I am sure explained to Kyle, stop wrecking my equipment. This had been going on for quite some time and Childress just snapped. Not justifying his actions. However Kyle's ego, his disrespect and disregard for others are unacceptable.
Speeding ticket and court appearance have nothing to do with this situation.

Push to Pass Button - NASCAR?

General

Robbie Solesbee said:
Next year the turbochargers return so it will be interesting if the League will keep the push to pass or even if it would work on turbos. Honda better not take any thing for granted because Chevy is back with a a twin turbo V6 and Penske was the first to sign. It could be feasible in NASCAR if they went to fuel injection and a rev limiter.
Are you kidding???? That would be so un-NASCAResque. Don't you know by now that NASCAR changes the things they shouldn't change and does not change the things they should change. It's the NASCAR way.

Close counts in Horseshoes and Hand Grenades

Current NASCAR

There's no question that Hildebrand made a rookie mistake - as you said, he could have gotten out of the gas and still won. He's still young and this race was certainly a learning experience for him - maybe he'll have another shot at winning the "big one". I do feel good for Wheldon - he's a "good guy" and this race was a one-time deal for him - hopefully, he'll be fortunate enough to find future employment as a result.

Regarding the World 600 - I have no idea who would have won that race if it had finished under "normal conditions" (if there is such a thing). I just know that I hate these races that end with fuel being such a big issue. I do realize that fuel strategy is one of the components involved in winning races (especially an endurance race)- it's just a factor that I wish wasn'tsuch a big part of determining the outcome of a NASCAR race.

Impressed by Ricky Craven in the ESPN Booth

General

I always thought Ricky was a good racer......not one of the superstars, but a good racer nonetheless. I, too, have been even more impressed with him as a commentator and race analyst. He has good knowledge of the drivers, the tracks, and as a former driver, he can relate well to what is happening on the track. Furthermore, he has a good ability to relate that knowledge and experience to the viewers..........and I hope to see more of him on the race telecasts.

INDY, BEWARE OF THE PITFALLS

General

Good post, Tim...............and I'm sure the IRL will want to research that "Car of Tomorrow" idea, as well as the NASCAR brainstorm called the "Chase", the top 35, the "Lucky Dog", etc. They might even want to check out NASCAR's new refueling system............which is working so much better than the old system. It seems to me that NASCAR is running out of feet to shoot holes in.

Editorial Cartoonists Weigh In

Yeah, PK............didn't mean to turn a lighthearted discussion into something else. I prefer the lighthearted types, anyway. I say it is what it is - let the state handle it.
