Stock Car Racing History

What was of even more interest to me in the SCR contribution from Russ Thompson was that it contains the tail end of a story about George Jefferson and brother, Harry winning the Ranier 200 Winston West race at Evergreen. As you know, I'd later sponsor George with Derrike Cope driving under our 7-Eleven banner. Now, if you'll just post the entire story, Chase, I'll be a really, really happy camper!! Here's the ending:

Engine builder, Parky Nall in the story above, had saved George Jefferson's life the previous season when an errant car ran through the infield killing a west coast NASCAR official. Nall would find even greater fame after moving to Charlotte, as noted in the 2005 story below that appeared in the Charlotte Observer in 2005:

1974 Evergreen 200

November 23, 1980 - Petty Pockets Phoenix

Stock Car Racing History

Chase, that's a nice writeup with good photo clips you've got posted on your Bench Racing blog link.

Although the physical location of this Phoenix track hasn't changed since it opened in 1964, it's always interesting to see what dateline city/town is used in news stories about the events. Occasionally you'll see a Phoenix dateline and for many years Goodyear, AZ datelines were used. Currently, most news stories use an Avondale, AZ dateline, but I note the news clip in your blog has a Cashion, AZ dateline. Everybody has gotten a piece of the Phoenix track news credit at one time or another!

I also see by the results that Mel Larson , proprietor of the Circus-Circus in Las Vegas was still indulging in his love of racing into the 9th decade of the twentieth century.

Some years back, when Phoenix got it's Cup date, an old problem that used to haunt previous promoter, Dennis Wood was solved by the highway department. The old Salt River bed which was dry most of the year, sometimes flooded over the only access road to P.I.R. during heavy spring and fall rains. In the past, some Phoenix events were postponed due to flooding from the Salt River.

Below is just one news clip of many (this from March 1978's Evening Independent) documenting problems suffered by Dennis Wood through the years because of Salt River flooding. I guess new owner, Buddy Jobe had more political clout and was able to sway the highway department to fix the issue.

Racing History Minute - November 23, 1975

Stock Car Racing History

Tim the following year, in March 1976, poor Cecil Gordon had his throttle hang going down the backstretch during Saturday afternoon practice on the old Richmond half-mile. He hit the turn 3 ARMCO and wood fence full speed and tore his car all to pieces. NASCAR allowed Cecil to work on the car all night with a group of volunteers in a fairgrounds exhibit building.

On Sunday afternoon, Cecil lined up in 29th position in that ragged, patched back together yellow #24 Chevy. When the checkers flew, Cecil had driven that beat up wreck from 29th to 7th position, endearing himself to every spectator in the Richmond grandstands. It was one of the greatest drives by an independent in the face of adversity I ever saw at a NASCAR race.
