Mike Harmon Arrested; Charged in Theft of Jennifer Jo Cobb's Hauler

Current NASCAR

Courts are busy around the Charlotte area. We have multiple Jeremy Mayfield cases and Brian France divorce hearings.

Now comes word of Mike Harmon being arrested and charged with stealing Jennifer Jo Cobb's hauler. Seems JJC also had stuff stolen at Daytona in February if I remember correctly.

Dick Trickle commits suicide

Stock Car Racing History

Here is the obituary authorized by Dick's family as published by Warlick Funeral Home and The Charlotte Observer:

Richard Trickle
( October 27, 1941 - May 16, 2013 )

Richard Dick Trickle, age 71, of Iron Station, NC died of a self-inflicted gunshot. He had been suffering for some time with severe chronic pain, had seen many doctors, none of which could find the source of his pain. His family as well as all those who knew him, find his death very hard to accept, and though we will hurt from losing him for some time, hes no longer suffering and we take comfort knowing hes with his very special angel.

He is survived by his wife Darlene (McMahon)Trickle, three children Victoria Bowman (John), Tod Trickle, and Chad Trickle (Shannon), and 3 grandchildren, Lucas Bowman, Courtney Trickle and Carlee Trickle. He lost his oldest grandchild Nicole Bowman in a tragic car accident nearly 12 years ago. He was the son of the late Leo and Lauretta Trickle and is survived by his brothers Duaine Trickle, Charles Trickle and sisters Delores Iwanski, and Susan Trickle.

Dicks passion in life was his racing. He touched many lives throughout his career, provided memories for many that will last a lifetime. Many thought when he retired he would continue as a car owner, but he was driver at heart, he wanted to be behind the wheel and be in control of his destiny. We believe he felt himself no longer able to be behind that wheel of life or be the man he only knew how to be because of the pain and suffering.

His passion was racing but his love was his family. This is a very difficult time for the family, they hope everyone will understand and respect their wishes to have private services for his funeral. They appreciate all the calls, messages, and letters of support, but at this time need to be together as a family.

There have been requests for where to send flowers, in lieu of flowers the family has asked that a donation be made in Memory of Dick to: Victory Junction, 4500 Adams Way, Randleman, NC 27317. They thank you for all your love, thoughts, and prayers.

Is Jeff Gordon Fer it? Agin it? or Whichever Way the Money $$$ Blows?

General

Let me say right up front that I have no ax to grind with Jeff Gordon. I no longer call him Wonder Boy or laugh like I used to at the itty bitty little ole mustache he tried to grow when driving the Baby Ruth Busch Series Ford for Bill Davis.

But I did think about his on again / off again history of supporting smoking products on the one hand and smoking cessation products on the other today.

Why you might ask would I bring this up? Well, when I paid for gas today at a local convenience store I noticed a display of Jeff Gordon and Tony Stewart Bic cigarette lighters on the counter. Since I stopped smoking 5 years ago, I don't usually pay too much attention. But 5 years ago was the same time Jeff was endorsing Nicorette gum and driving the Nicorette stop smoking Chevy for Hendrick Motorsports.

We all know that Jeff is a 4-time Winston Cup Champion who used to have no problem taking money from the coffers of RJ Reynolds Tobacco Co. In fact it was rumored that it was Winston money that paid for first wife, Brooke's chest redevelopment job back in the day. The Circle Track Magazine photo below shows everybody willing to take the big Winston Cigarette bucks.

In 2008, Jeff began to do television ads for the Nicorette smoking cessation product and run a Nicorette sponsored car such as the one seen below in a Wikimediacommons photo taken at the Richmond track in September 2008:

The following year, 2009, Bic made its announcement that Jeff's likeness would appear on Bic lighters - which are most commonly used to light up the cigarettes Jeff had tried to get us to stop using the year before.

BIC Expands with NASCAR
Posted on April 1, 2009

BIC Lighter has signed a multi-year licensing agreement with four-time NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Champion, Jeff Gordon , to create another popular line of licensed lighter wraps. The lighters feature four bold new designs featuring Gordon, the iconic #24, and his new car for 2009. Gordon will join Hendrick Motorsports teammate Dale Earnhardt Jr. in the Pro Series NASCAR Drivers 50 count tray, which will be available at convenience stores and gas stations this month, said Adam Blumenthal, brand manager of pocket lighter marketing, BIC Consumer Products USA. The lighters carry a suggested retail price of $1.69 per lighter.

I know that Bill Elliott and others have driven for multiple beer brands, but Jeff's actions seem a little different to me. I also know that these days he's more focused on stopping hunger than stopping smoking or promoting smoking.

However, when my late promoter friend, Paul Sawyer characterized many drivers as "Whores With Helmets" - I suspect this was the kind of deal he was thinking of.

Anyway, I can't figure when it comes to smoking if Jeff is fer it or agin it.

Racing History Minute - May 16, 1964

Stock Car Racing History

Just imagine the logistics of racing in Hampton one night and Hickory the next. That's a 350-mile tow after the Hampton race with limited help, all tired.

Tim, later that same year in September 1964, Darlington would run Labor Day Monday, Hickory on Friday night and Richmond on Sunday. When I went to the Richmond showrooms of Lawrence Plymouth, Southside Dodge and Richmond Ford on Saturday to see the cars and meet Richard Petty, David Pearson and Ned Jarrett, all three cars were still covered in Hickory clay in the Richmond dealer showrooms.

I never made it to Hickory until the late 80s for a Busch race. Never saw it as dirt. I remember passing the track going to the mountains from eastern NC in the early 70s.

I always thought the greatest racing scenes in "Last American Hero" were those featuring Sam Ard in #00 and Jimmy Hensley in #63 running side-by-side in an early 70s Hickory Late Model Sportsman race. That movie also featured Ned in the track office at Hickory where he was then promoting.

A rather inspiring item I read in an ESPN story by Ryan McGee told that when Bobby Isaac passed in 1977, Ned gave the recently married Bobby's family two cemetery plots at Catawba Memorial Park overlooking the Hickory track. Ned stated that one day he'd be buried there beside his old friend, Bobby Isaac overlooking the Hickory track.

Current NASCAR

I never had any doubt she'd be in it by hook or crook.

One thing I noticed this morning is that there wiill be no speed limit on pit road during the mandatory pit stop during qualifying. NASCAR has gone to great lengths to protect pit crews since Ricky Rudd slid into Bill Elliott's car on pit road at Atlanta resulting in a crew fatality.

I'm not sure NASCAR needed to make this one race change and risk an unfortunate incident.
