A Racing History Minute - April 7, 1957

Stock Car Racing History

Thank you, Tim, for another great look back at our stock car racing heritage.

When I think of Fireball Roberts, I always think of the great asphalt superspeedway hero Bill France, Sr. ferociously promoted.

However, Fireball must of been pretty darned good on the dirt, too.

His win you recap at N. Wilkesboro was the 2nd of eight wins he scored in the 1957 Grand National campaign - the most of any year in his career.

His first win of that 1957 season came the only time NASCAR held a Grand National race at Florida's Titusville-Cocoa 1.6-mile road course.

The other 7 wins he racked up in the 1957 GN season all came on dirt ovals - the one you recapped at N. Wilkesboro, as well as at Langhorne, Pa., Charlotte's Southern States Fairgrounds, Shelby, NC, Newport, Tn., Newberry, SC, and Concord, NC.

Fireball also earned 4 pole positions that year - all on dirt - twice at N. Wilkesboro and also at Wilson, NC and the Occoneechee track at Hillsboro, NC.

You pointed out the caution at N. Wilkesboro brought out by Dick Beaty, who'd go on to become one of NASCAR's best liked and most respected officials. In looking at Fireball's 1957 campaign, it is of interest to see that on July 12th he finished 5th at Charlotte's Southern States Fairgrounds in the 1956 Ford #34 owned by Beaty.

The more great historical things folks like you post here at RR, the more I want to go find more stuff I never knew.

Thanks, Legend.

Will We See a Joey & Tony Tango at Martinsville (takes 2 they say)?

Dustup between Joey Logano and Tony Stewart set on simmer
2013-04-05T23:40:24 Friday, April 5, 2013
Updated 11:40PM

By Hank Kurz, Jr.

The Associated Press

MARTINSVILLE, Va. Tony Stewart and Joey Logano say their dustup is over. They just havent said it to each other.

The drivers tangled two weeks ago at the end of the NASCAR Sprint Cup race at California, where Stewart thought Logano had blocked him in the closing laps. Stewart parked his car near Loganos and approached him. There was some shoving, but crew members broke it up before any punches were landed.

Stewart said Friday he spent the week off after the race at Fontana on vacation in Georgia, (Wonder if he was in secret training with Johnny Mallonee & Tommie Clinard?!) away from cellphone service and television, and Logano said while he never made any effort to contact the three-time champion, he thinks the break provided everyone with time to relax a little bit and cool off.

That doesnt mean, of course, that their feud cant fire up again. And if theres a track where close racing can lead to torn-up cars and injured feelings in a hurry, its tiny Martinsville Speedway with its tricky, 0.526-mile oval.

Stewart, concerned after practice that his three cars were not performing as well as he would like, said he wasnt sure if the message he tried to teach Logano after the last race had even registered.

We wont know that until we see how he reacts in the same situation the next time, he said.

Logano, though, isnt sure he would do anything differently, especially while going for a victory.

We were racing really hard and we go in the corner and I shoved up into him, he said. I guess you can take some blame for that, but its just hard racing. Were going out there to win this thing and thats what were trying to do.

Stewart and Jeff Burton agreed that Logano is likely feeling pressure after moving from Joe Gibbs Racing to Roger Penske Racing this season. Burton said Logano would do well to do more listening.

When confronted with an issue from something on the track, Burton said, I dont think he handles it very well. He doesnt just step back and say, You know what, OK, let me listen to what youre saying. I may disagree with you but let me listen. He tends to resist, as if, Im right, Im right, Im right.

I know I had an issue with him a few years ago and I encouraged him to go look at the tape. I had already looked at it, so I knew what it showed. I didnt tell him that. The next week I asked him if he had looked at it and he said, No, I dont need to. That kind of attitude is not welcomed, Burton said.

NASCAR declined to penalize Stewart for going in search of Logano.

In other forms of racing, they just go down and slug it out and then they normally end up eating dinner with each other at a fast food joint, Stewart said. You know, a sit down deal later in the evening. That is the way racing is across the country and it gets settled but the problem here is that NASCAR has to keep some law and order.

For Logano, the immediacy with which drivers are asked to react make things dicey, too, and he said his comments after the race, as well as Stewarts, reflected the tension and heat of the moment.

Darlington's "Lady in Black"

Current NASCAR

Me, neither, Tim. First time I ever set foot in Darlington (as you know) was when my buddy Frank and I stepped off a Greyhound Bus from Richmond around 6:30 a.m on Labor Day Monday morning, 1966. We walked from the bus depot ( at a closed Pure Oil gas station) to the track. Along the way, we passed a big vcant lot where a church group was selling breakfast. Eggs, sausage, country ham, biscuits and grits was my introduction to Darlington. Spent many wonderful weekends thereafter- usually staying in Florence - except for 1971 & 1972 when we pitched tents.

At the bottom of that same page is an ad for 1957 Saturday Night Micro Midget races at Hanover Speedway.

According to the ad, the track is 4 miles north of Wilmington on Market Street.

And speaking of track "beauty queens " - here's an interesting link to a story in the August 30, 1957 Wilmington (NC) Star-News covering the races at Winston-Salem's Bowman Gray Stadium.

http://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=1454&dat=19570830&id=9GlgAAAAIBAJ&sjid=uXENAAAAIBAJ&pg=4300,5162538

Just in case you don't recognize the name of the outgoing beauty queen mentioned in the last paragraph of the article, you might recognize that Miss Zachary, who was married the same year and moved to Daytona Beach, Florida, has a son named Brian who carries her maiden name, Zachary, as his middle name.

Darlington's "Lady in Black"

Makes you wonder if Darlington just has a thing about folks being stripped of titles.

Most of us are familiar with our late RR member, Larry Frank and his protest Southern 500 Darlington win in 1962 in which Junior Johnson was originally declared the winner.

How many folks know, I wonder, that the original 1987 Miss Southern 500, Karen Waters of Spartanburg, was stripped of her title after just 2 hours?!

Here's a link to view the story:

Jeffrey Earnhardt, the grandson of the late Dale Earnhardt, will drive JR Motorsports No. 5 Chevrolet in the April 26 Nationwide race at Richmond, Va.

JRM is co-owned by Dale Earnhardt Jr., NASCAR's most popular driver.

Jeffrey Earnhardt is just the second fourth generation driver to compete in NASCARs three national series. The late Adam Petty was the other. Jeffrey is the son of Kerry Earnhardt, Earnhardt Jr.s half brother.

The response has been incredible. I received a lot of text messages and tweets from people in NASCAR, and the fans have been great, Jeffrey said.

Between my grandfather, my dad, and Dale Jr., there is such a huge fan base that is very supportive of my family. I just appreciate the opportunity. I cant wait. I wish the Richmond race weekend was tomorrow.

Picturing GoGirl chasing skinny Joey down pit road at Martinsville... that might be better than a cat fight! Two damned Yankee carpetbaggers brawling in the Old Dominion, just down the road from the former Confederate capitals in Danville & Richmond. Imagine that!
