Is TV coverage too good ?

Current NASCAR

Steve, while I no longer attend races in person due mostly to costs involved these days, I have to say that watching on television cannot compare to being there, as I'm sure you agree. While we see things on television we may have missed at the track, the sounds and smells of being there can't be replaced in the recliner or on the couch. While I will always regret that circumstances have delegated me to the recliner instead of the track, I sort of look at the technology of television with a jaded opinion. I still think Ken Squier calling the 1979 Daytona 500 last lap and Ned Jarrett calling his son home in the 500 as the BEST of television sports. The new camera angles, too many talking heads, and race buddies and rhodents do nothing for me. Nice post and I really appreciate you putting it here for consideration.

R.I.P. Cecil Flash" Gordon

General

I was privileged to sit next to Cecil at the autograph table last year at the Stocks For Tots event at The NASCAR Institute. Everytime a fan would hand Cecil one of the "hero cards" from back in the days of his racing career, you could tell the emotion inside him as he looked at it carefully and signed each autograph in a slow and deliberate way. He truly appreciated his fans. After the event Cecil and I chatted for a few minutes before we went our separate ways. He remarked that he is always amazed how fans remember him and, he said, seem to look back to the old days of racing. I don't think he realized how big a part of the building of the sport he really was. I have many wonderful memories of Cecil and his racing career. We laughed about that day in Charlotte, all those years ago, when he was driving his own tow truck out of the track and I climbed on the running board and talked his ears off for 15 minutes in all that traffic. Cecil was truly the epitome of a great guy. God bless his family and comfort them and all of Cecil's friends.

Novel Way to Earn Race Tix for Life

General

Sorry Dave, but Ann and I are too old to start over with a newborn. Besides, if I were to go for free tickets, it would not be to that God forsaken track in New Hampshire.

Another Grand Marshal I never heard of

Current NASCAR

I haven't heard of him either Dave. Wonder if he's heard of me? NASCAR can come up with the most off the wall no bodies for this Grand Marshall Job. Where is Matt Dillon when you need him?

HAVE YOU DRIVEN A DODGE LATELY?? BRAD DID

Stock Car Racing History

Come on Jimmie! Had to check up???? Really??? Give me a break Dude. You had the whole track to miss that Dodge. As for Chad jumping down to talk to NASCAR about Brad "blending" too soon, that is one of the most ludicrous confrontations in the history of NASCAR. Not meaning to respond negative to Chad's actions, but how in the world can a crew chief who has bent more rules than Danica Patrick has bent sheet metal worry about where Brad blended. That Dodge simply outran the Chevy and Brad simply outdrove Jimmie. Whether or not Brad can win the Cup remains to be seen, but I picked him before the Daytona 500 to do it.

Ryan Blaney Youngest Truck Series Winner

Current NASCAR

I was impressed with him the first time I saw him in the Nationwide race earlier this year. He is a well spoken, very cordial young man. He should go far in the sport for sure. A sponsor's dream! Can't wait to see him climb the ladder.

School Buses and Stock Car Racing; Before Stenhouse, Donlavey Team Had a Blue Bird

Stock Car Racing History

Dave, I actually rode the school bus from the first day of seventh grade until I graduated. Funny thing is the year I started first grade they had just built a new elementary school which was two blocks from my house. I walked to school every day first through sixth. Have some great memories from those school bus rides and Mr. Clyde Jefferson Lever driving. He was one awesome man.

That is awesome Jim but please don't make use of that marker too quickly. Maybe 50 years or so from now.
