Two to Tango? Or maybe more

Current NASCAR

Frankly, as of this writing, I have not determined by feelings for last night's race yet. I did observe a most beautiful Daytona Speedway and a sparkling field of cars. I was sad Trevor got put into the wall so early as I was hoping to see him follow up with this Daytona 500 victory. I watched every single lap of the wide-open coverage and I did enjoy that angle of it. I was happy to have another first time winner this year, even if he does drive for Jack Rousch. The competition was close, as you mentioned, Johnny due to the odd circumstances of the drafting qualities of these carbon copy stamped cars. But, when it was over, there was none of my usual elation I feel after Daytona races, no let down that it was over, nothing to be thought of except for heading to bed. I can truthfully say that I have never felt so ambivilent about any Daytona race. Wonder if I'm just too old now?

Another Change

General

Dave, it was most interesting to watch that. I couldn't help but wonder just how much rubbing it took to rub all the Pam off. I know they used to use Pam on the show cars they drove from race to race to keep bugs and all off the front of the car and, as Johnny M. says, to keep the love bugs off cars. Pam needs to sponsor a car I suppose.

Give Lesa France Kennedy Credit

General

To whomever may be responsible for the beauty of Daytona, thank you. Dave, thanks for pointing out the name of the proper party to whom I may address those thanks. It is, indeed, a beautiful place and made even more so when the overhead shots appear to show a necklace of sparkling diamonds on a bed of black velvet. Thanks, Lesa.

Happy Birthday to King Richard

Current NASCAR

For years and years, my family would send The King a birthday card. My mother thought that was one of her missions in racing and always saw that it was done. Happy Birthday Richard and thanks for all the wonderful times and memories.

And I very well remember the news of Fireball's passing on this day. We were in Daytona when we heard it (actually St. Augustine where we were staying for the race) and it was a sad day.

WOW! HOT OUTSIDE ALREADY

General

The city where I live, well actually, outside the city, has a slogan that says "Famously Hot". Columbia, SC, does seem to exceed the norm in summer termps, mostly it seems from humidity. Whatever the reason, it's been hot here with every day in June exceeding 90 degrees which has not happened since records were started 120 years ago. It is now 8:50 and 85 outside. Hot, hot. With all due respect to Al Gore (of which I have ZERO) it's NOT global warming although it may be heavenly inspired climate change as scientiest have documented has occurring throughout the existance of the world. Be that as it may, this is not a history lesson nor a religious sermon, it is intended to be a statement of what is to come tonight at Daytona.

I read an interview with Tony Stewart today in which he says, basically, "if you try to block me, you're toast". He has stated, promised in fact, that any driver who blocks him on track will suffer the consequences and be "wall bound". Sounds like old Tony is going to become the official in charge of providing test material for the softwalls.

We shall see tonight. "Have at it boys" will become "I've had it boys". Should be a good race if last night was any indication.

New NASCAR Study Says Sport Needs New Fans

General

My God!!!! I cannot believe this. NASCAR actually paid some company to tell them they need new fans! I would guess that is a pretty good study because NASCAR has been driving the old ones away faster than a hemi-Plymouth in a pole run at Daytona in 1964. Everytime I think I have heard the epitome of ignorance from those people on Volusia Avenue in Daytona, they top themselves.

Jeff, it is borderline comedy but it is also very, very sad. Demographics don't mean a hill of beans. We here at Racers Reunion have been trying to tell them for three years what they need to do and NASCAR has only acknowledged our existence a couple of times and one of those times was using your song, Jeff, for the HOF announcement for Ned Jarrett.

And, just what the hell does NASCAR consider "core fans"? I think all of us here were, at one time, core fans. Some of us still hang on the hope. I just finished watching the Nationwide race and will be watching the 400 tomorrow simply because it is Daytona. Does that make me a core fan? Or just someone who enjoys watching races on the tracks I grew up with. They can bulldoze Kentucky, Chicagoland, Texas, Homestead and any of those new all alike tracks and give me back MY Southern 500 at Darlington on Labor Day weekend.

Next time NASCAR wants to pay for such a study, have them go to www.racersreunion.com and we can tell them what they need to do. Damn, you can cure ignorance with education but there is NO cure for stupid and there are an awful lot of stupid people trying to run that circus known as NASCAR. Brian Z. France is the biggest ZERO in sports. NFL is locked out, NBA is locked out. Someone ought to lock that idiot IN.

Stock Car Racing History

And I will THIRD that motion Johnny. Hope you and yours, and everyone in Racers Reunion, has a great holiday and remembers the reason we celebrate this date. There may be some in this country now not so interested in independence but 2012 is coming.

Fred Lorenzen

-RacersReunion® OUTREACH

Before Bobby Allison, it was "Fearless Freddie" I hated because he was the major competition for my guy. Go back and look at videos of the 1964 Rebel 300 and the National 400 from Charlotte. Two of the best examples of the competition between Freddie and The King. But, just as I learned to deeply respect and appreciate Bobby Allison as I realized his contribution to racing and now, for the past couple of years thanks to RR getting to spend quite a bit of time around him, he and I both know those feelings have changed. I will send Freddie a card, maybe even a letter, and let him know how I have come to respect him and appreciate his contributions to the sport.

Richard Petty 200th with Ronald Reagan 1984 Daytona Firecracker on TV TONIGHT - June 30

Stock Car Racing History

Thanks, Dave. I watched that, thanks to your post or otherwise I wouldn't have known it was on. What a great honor to The King, The President, and the time when our country was truly great!! The U.S.A. has the potential to return to greatness but certain individuals must be returned to the slum areas from whence they sprang.
