DECADE BY DECADE

Administrative

Ok, folks, time to get back into the groove to discussions here. I was thinking about things for future Legendtorials on the Tuesday night radio show (Racing Through History)and thought about enlistingyour thoughts. I want to take the sport, decade by decade, and find out what YOU think.

This is sort of a two-part question which we will start today and run through the next several days. So,here goes:

1. What do you think is the single most important development in the sport for the decade of the 1950s?

2. Who do you think is the single most influential individual in the sport for the decade of the 1950s?

I intentionally did not mention the 1940s as we all know NASCAR was formed in that decade. We are dealing with STOCK CAR RACING only here so keep that in mind.

Thanks, and I look forward to hearing (actually seeing) your thoughts.

Tim

Top-10 Reasons Kyle Busch Was Going 128 Miles Per Hour On The Road Tuesday In North Carolina

General

Jerry, those are really good, and imaginative. But I know your talent for writing such things from that "Legend's Night Before Christmas" from a couple of years ago. This has attracted so much attention that Brent and George were making jokes about Busch and NASCAR at 6:40 a.m. and really giving a bad impression of what NASCAR is all about. Interesting question posed, however by Brent. If Kyle loses his drivers license will he lose his NASCAR license. When I raced, I had to show my South Carolina License to get a NASCAR license. But maybe they just put those things in M&Ms bags now. Thanks for a great laugh this morning.

Kyle Busch Ticketed; 128 in 45 mph Zone

I was wondering, so please help me here someone. I know the Lexus was yellow. Was it SPRINT yellow or M&M yellow? I think that makes a huge difference in future advertising revenue for one of those entities.

I turned on the tv this morning at 5:15 as I prepared to mount my treadmill for my 45 minute workout. I was just in time to see a three minute report about the incident. The attorney for Kyle was being interviewed then they went from one radio talk show to another throughout the southeast. Kyle was catching so much flack I thought I was listening to the Glenn Beck show blasting Obama. It was brutal and I do mean BRUTAL. The bottom line though, after all the talk radio clips and Kyle's attorney's thoughts, this was said:

"Lowe's Motor Speedway is expecting a huge bump in ticket sales because of the incident".

Wonder if Marcus Smith is paying for the ticket, the defense, and, perhaps, paying off the North Carolina Judicial System?

Local radio DJs are getting lots of mileage out of this today. Two of the morning hosts who aren't really into racing have been blasting the news of such recklessness and have made more fun of Kyle Busch than I could even begin to recite. I do hope The Right Reverend Joe Gibbs has taught that boy to pray before he gets behind the wheel. At least pray for the other folks on the road with him. At least the Lexus was yellow so it could be seen coming (AND GOING). But, I must admit, that on April 12, 1978, I was stopped for 137 in a 55. Kyle, if you need legal advice, all me. I didn't lose my license on that one.

TWO WORTHY OF SPECIAL RECOGNITION

Current NASCAR

As I watched the Hall of Fame induction last night, two individuals came to mind who deserve special recognition and applause from all fans of stock car racing. Funny thing is, I had just spoken about one of those individuals on Sunday with a group of my racing friends and complimented the outstanding job I think she does week in and week out.

That young lady is Krista Voda with Speed. Each and every time she is involved in a broadcast, she is very professional, very knowledgeable, and if she is reading a teleprompter, which I don't believe she is, she is the best telepromter reader EVER, in spite of what you may hear out of D.C. She is exceptional. Please note, when you see her on Speed covering a race, she has no legal pad, no notes, no anything we can see in front of her yet she presents facts and insights to rival anything anyone else may present.

Last night, she was dressed appropriately and handled the interviews of those Honorees coming off the stage with great insight as well. I was impressed beyond words. Kudos to Ms. Voda and to SPEED for giving someone with such talent a place to showcase that talent. She sets a standard for aspiring broadcasters. Thank you Ms.Voda.

The other individual who should receive some special thanks is Winston Kelley. He has made the Hall of Fame an exceptional showplace from what I could see on television and I will be planning a trip up there soon. Winston has a great deal of class in dealing with all the negative press that came out about the Hall a few months ago and he continues his tireless efforts to make the HOF a place where all the race fans, those like me from way back, and the new fans coming into the sport, can learn, remember, enjoy, and look forward to the next generation. Great job Winston. Oh, and when they were complimenting you on air last night, your wife looked at you with such obvious pride and joy. That was a wonderful site to see although you were looking straight ahead appearing to be somewhat embarrassed to be acknowledged in any way. You're the man, Winston. Keep doing what you're doing and I'll see you one Friday in June, for sure. Hope to meet you while I'm there.

Ok, there you have it. Two folks who have sincerely impressed The Legend this week. How great it is to have such folks associated with the sport we at Racers Reunion love so much.

Scout Honor, Bobby Allison says he won 85 NASCAR CUP RACES at tonight's NASCAR Hall of Fame.

General

Yep, Dennis, he did say that! We said that when we inducted Bobby into The Memory Lane Racers Reunion Hall of Fame in Mooresville. He DID win 85. Just take a look at the record books and see the other driver who won 84 and it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out who puts pressure on NASCAR not to recognize that other win. Bobby won 85 Cup races, period. The other guy can't count past twenty anyway and then only when he takes off his shoes. As for writing all those folks, I have, and I know several who have and there even was a petition drive few years ago to which NASCAR responded saying they were "looking into it" or something to that effect. No steps were ever taken to correct the record however. I would recommend Bobby look into hiring a gopher to assist him in lobbying NASCAR. Seems such animals carry great influence in Daytona.

I should buy a Lottery Ticket

General

Hey B.T. I note that you failed to respond to my question about the handshake. Sort of like certain political folks NOT being invited to the Royal Wedding. Oh well, I guess I'll just keep plugging along.

Hey, BT, is it possible to meet you and shake your hand? Maybe some of that luck will rub off. Have a great time at Charlotte. That is exciting. As for winning the Camry, well, I'm not a Toyota kind of guy. Good luck though.

Bobby Allison's 85th race win in question?

General

Ok, folks, consider this. SPEED, ESPN, and everyone currently involved in race broadcasting spend countless hours touting Kyle Busch has having 97 NASCAR wins, counting down until he passes Pearson. On that note, how in the world can they deny Bobby that other win. And, Jeff, you are correct. NASCAR credited Tiny with at least 2 of the Grand American wins in his Grand National total. Bobby deserves to have the record made right andlast night would have been the most opportune time to have done that.
