"Thumbs up" to NASCAR from The Legend

General

A couple of weeks ago, while working in the yard, I slipped and was about to fall hard on concrete when I reached out to grab a post to break the fall. As it happened, by wrist and thumb bent back pretty far and, frankly, it hurt big time. As I am very accustomed to my lack of coordination causing pain, I didn't give too much thought to the fact that my hand was really, really hurting.

Next morning when I got up, the hand was slightly "puffed" but the really hurting part was the thumb joint. Someone suggested I pick up a "thumb brace" which could be found at my local pharmacy. As the pain got worse, I went and paid $15.00 for the brace. When I got home I was opening the box when I noticed the NASCAR logo on the top of the box with the words "Officially Licensed". What a surprise!

While I do not intentionally avoid buying NASCAR approved and supported items, and I do support NASCAR sponsors when I can, it's not as it once was. I always shop Lowe's, for instance, and wouldn't set foot in that Toyota sponsoring Home Depot. But I was totally unprepared for finding the NASCAR Officially Licensed thumb brace. Leaves me to wonder, however, if the middle finger brace is also officially licensed by NASCAR for those who may have injured that digit?

Thanks, NASCAR, for licensing the product. I must explain, however, that as your efforts to attract fans to the races, the brace hasn't helped me all that much yet. Hand still hurts pretty badly. But thanks anyway.

CAN YOU SAY KISS MY "BRICKS"?

Current NASCAR

Yes, what a fast 20 years it has been. The Brickyard was a big thing then and as I recall, there were about 100,000 fans at the track when NASCAR first went there for testing. What a change 20 years has brought.

Dave, you certainly had a memorable time when the first one was going on. Glad you did try for a 20th year repeat.

Ty Dillon wins first career Nationwide Series race at Indy

Current NASCAR

Ty drove a great race. Obviously, from the interview Kyle Busch gave, he realized he had just had his butt kicked by a rookie who had never won a race. As for the "kissing the bricks", I wish they would stop that as well as the burn-outs. Some things are just ridiculous. Congratulations to Ty and Richard.

What is the first Nascar race you attended

Stock Car Racing History

I somehow forgot to include Greenville-Pickens, Myrtle Beach, Metrolina in Charlotte, Newberry, and probably others. Truly, there was hardly a weekend that passed in my life from 1952 through 1990 that I wasn't at a race somewhere. There were some of the '67 and '68 season I missed because I was sailing around the ocean with the Navy.

What is the first Nascar race you attended

Stock Car Racing History

First NASCAR race was the modified race at Columbia Speedway, September, 1952. First Grand National Race was at Columbia Speedway in 1953. First Darlington, spring, 1957. First Charlotte, June, 1960. First Daytona, February 1962, First Atlanta, March, 1962, First Rockingham, October 1965, First Talladega, the spring race of 1970. Throw in races at Martinsville, Bristol, North Wilkesboro, Augusta, Savannah, Jacksonville, Bowman-Gray, Hillsboro, Pocono and even the short-lived track in Trenton, NJ. I have been one very, very fortunate man. Thank you, Uncle Bobby for getting me into this. Thanks to my Mom and Dad for becoming huge fans and keeping up the tradition.

The King's Politics were predictable ... or were they?

Stock Car Racing History

Very interesting! I was at Darlington when Slick Willie came avisting and watched as he stood there for driver introductions. Most drivers shook his hand, Mark Martin practically kissed him but Richard walked right on by without a handshake. I can remember that so clearly as I was standing right there. That was the year (1992) I worked with the television production for the Christmas with Racing Families. That was also the day we did a 45 minute interview with Doris Roberts and Wanda Lund in the press facility in the infield where Clinton and party were chowing down on a catered banquet. Oh, the stories from that day!

The Race Team Alliance and NASCAR, new information

Current NASCAR

Who was it, ole Will Shakespeare who wrote "first thing we do is kill all the lawyers."? Not sure and I don't have time to look up that quote tonight. But I did want to take time to let you folks know that both NASCAR and the RTA have released statements today that there will be NO direct communication between the parties. All communications will be through the respective law firms retained by the entities. Sounds sort of like "stakeholders" and "management" want to be sure all wording is more than just politically correct.

Go find the report and read it. It is quite interesting to say the least. And having worked in the legal profession for 37 years, most of which involved contracts with sports teams and coaches, and players, I can't wait to hear the legal doubletalk to which we are about to be exposed. Just wait folks. Trust me. Better start watching reruns of Matlock and Perry Mason to get yourself well versed.
