On This Day June 28, 1981 NASCAR Winston West Coca Cola 200 at Laguna Seca Raceway

Stock Car Racing History

Entered in this event were both Bobby & Davey Allison.

21 cars started the race with Jimmy Insolo on the pole, Bobby Allison 2nd, Hershel McGriff 3rd, Roy Smith in 4th and Bill Schmitt starting in the 5th spot. Attrition was the rule of the day as only 9 cars were running at the finish. Davey Allison was a DNQ with a big shunt (hey it's a Laguna Seca term) in practice that destroyed the Arlie Cook owned Modesto Ford car.

The race was won by the late Roy Smith with Bill Schmitt finishing in 2nd, Jim Bown in 3rd, Don Waterman in 4th, Don Graham in 5th. Bobby Allison finished in the 6th spot

Although there were not that many lead changes in this event, there was quite a battle for 2nd thru fifth for a good portion of the race. Tim Richmond won his last race on this day after starting in 5th with Ricky Rudd finishing in 2nd (from 4th), Neil Bonnett in 3rd (from 14th), Terry Labonte in 4th (from the pole), and Bill Elliott (from 9th) rounding out the top 5.
