Name That Car

Stock Car Racing History

Afraid I have bad news Johnny....it seems the promoter slipped away with all of the proceeds AND your flag. It was a spirited contest anyway. I suspect you may have cheated a little with several years head start. Who else but someone older than me would begin to know where to look for this car?

You get the prize Johnny! Now what will I do to fill the rest of my afternoon? Ha!

This pic shows the bumper guard just like on Turner's car.....or "move aside" bar perhaps.

Curtis%20Turner.jpg

I had posted this as a reply to Tim Leeming's post, but it is snowing, I am bored and I figured there are others out there that I might stir into some mental activity.

One of our RR friends, Woody Delbridge sent me some pictures and a newspaper article concerning Curtis Turner's induction into the Hall of Fame. (none too soon I might add) This picture of Turner wheeling this big bulky sedan peaked my interest. The grill features and unique nose seemed vaguely familiar, but I was forced to do an exhaustive search on the web to try and identify this car. I would challenge all of the old car enthusiasts out there to name the make and model. I believe many of you will be surprised to learn what it is. As a small hint, this vehicle sold for just about double what your standard Ford or Chevrolet cost back in the day. It was NOT a cheap race car. I suppose whoever fielded the car figured that Curtis Turner was capable of winning enough $150 features to defray their investment. More likely though, it was another money guy who would have spent twice this in order to get the wins.

NASCAR Hall of Fame Induction

Current NASCAR

1939 Chrysler Imperial or Royal. My research turned up a dollar figure starting at $1195 in 1939, but never the less, a pretty expensive car to go dirt tracking with. 130 hp was somewhat of an advantage over the 80 hp Fords and such, but can you imagine what this beast weighed? All the better to move the competition aside, I suppose.

NASCAR Hall of Fame Induction

One of our RR friends, Woody Delbridge, sent me pictures and the newspaper article concerning Curtis Turner's induction into the Hall of Fame. For all of you automobile enthusiasts I would challenge you to identify the make and model car that is pictured here that Turner is wheeling. I'm pretty sure that I have pinned it down, but am surprised at what I found. It was not a cheap choice of race car, although it did have a lot of motor and was a solid built car. It wasn't your grand daddy's car...unless grand daddy was a bit wealthy.

Okay Devin, Dave, Thank you all for your prompt responses. I passed everything along to the concerned parties. I'm certain that this will resolve any issues that the potential member had.

I am just relieved to learn that no changes have been made to our flag while I was not paying attention. You have to be very attentive in today's political environment. (sarcasm...no, perhaps not)

Good man Dave! I knew someone would jump in here and help remedy this situation.

Our White House may have changed the flag this past weekend, but if so I wasn't aware of it. I'm sure this can be resolved with little fanfare....assuming our flag has not been changed, that is.

A friend of a friend has been attempting to sign up as a member of RacersReunion.

He says he is asked to answer and complete the question "What are the colors of the flag, red, white & _____"

He says that it does not take "blue" as an answer and asks for two words. Anyone know anything about this? I don't recall being quizzed on anything when I joined other than being a race fan, when and how long.

Stock Car Racing History

Happy Birthday Ray! Only had the pleasure of meeting you once at the Asphalt Angels car show a few years back, but you are an unforgettable character. Proud to have made your acquaintance. Hope this finds you in good health and you enjoy many more.

Let's Buy a 1-1/4 Mile Dirt Track

General

We were there for both AMA flat track races. It is a beautiful facility. We were fortunate to get seats in the fourth floor Jockey Lounge both years, closed circuit TV, bar, buffet, balcony...outstanding show and accommodations. The pits would require some major rework to accommodate cars, but I believe there is plenty of space to work with. It could be a major attraction as an auto race facility plus I am told that perhaps two AMA flat track events are in the works for 2015. The location and the existing facilities could be a real crown jewel for motor sports in this area. I would love to see that happen. Entering the grounds reminds one a little of VIR....some woods, a road, and all of a sudden this grand facility comes into view.
