Richard Petty finished 3rd in this race behind winner Bobby Allison and 2nd place Darrell Waltrip. He had relief driver help from Jimmy Insolo who had fallen out in his own car about half-way through the race. Considering Petty won the 1979 championship by only 11 points over DW, this was a huge deal to get the relief help from Insolo.
