The Green Flag Waves Once Again at the Historic Occoneechee-Orange Speedway

On Saturday, November 8, 2008 the green flag waved for the first time in 40 years at the historic Occoneechee-Orange Speedway in Hillsborough, NC.Formerly one of the premier tracks on the NASCAR circuit, the 9/10 mile dirt oval was closed in 1968 after 20 glorious years of operation. The track lay dormant for nearly 30 years before it was purchased from the France and Staley families by The Historic Preservation Foundation of NC (PNC) in the spring of 1997. That purchase was made possible by generous grants from the James M Johnston Trust and Classical American Homes Preservation Trust (CAHPT). In the fall of 1997, ownership of the old track was transferred to CAHPT. The site was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in May of 2002 alongside the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and the Bonneville Salt Flats. In 2007 a group of volunteers called the Historic Speedway Group (HSG) joined in the preservation and restoration efforts. Through the thick undergrowth and pine trees one could barely see the outline of the track along the banks of the Eno River. The concrete grand stands, once filled with thousands of cheering fans were overgrown with vines and trees. After nearly 2 years of sweat and many worn out chain saw chains and blades, the old race track and some of its original facilities were revealed and opened to the public as a park with walking trails and historical markers through out the facility. On Saturday afternoon, the roar and thunder of race cars, the smell of racing fuel, and cheers from anxious fans once again filled the air. No, this wasnt an actual race, but rather the site of the 18th annual banquet of the Old Timers Racing Club (OTRC). Through the efforts of OTRC president Mike Sykes, and HSG, vintage race cars which actually raced at Occoneechee, were brought to the track for parade laps. Several of the cars were piloted by racing legends such as Whitey Norman, Paul Lewis, Brownie King, Dewey Livengood, Fred Harb, Dink Widenhouse, Hank Thomas, and Billy Biscoe. Huge smiles, tales of racing back then, and gratitude were certainly the order of the day. When we began the restoration we never dreamed we would see cars on the track, said Frank Craig of the HSG, standing at the location where Bobby Isaacs once ran Bondy Longs car into the Eno River during a race. Craig spent much of his youth at the track and remembers some of the great racing legends who came there such as Richard Petty, Junior Johnson, and Fireball Roberts. Bill Mangum whose father Gordon Mangum was one of the early racing pioneers recalls, I was working the pit gate once when I saw Curtis Turner pull up in a taxi. He and 2 more in his group tried to get in pits but they didnt have enough pit passes. I made him go back and get another one. Mangum laughed as he remembered the story and early battles between his father and Turner. This brings back some great memories, said Whitey Norman as he climbed out of the Bob Welborn 57 Chevy convertible that he raced back thenand drove around the track today. All those who took part in this effort are champions. This was a HUGE win for the preservation and recognition of racing history. The RacersReunion.com crew is honored to have had the opportunity to cover this historic event. A DVD will be produced and sold here on RacersReunion.com with proceeds going to the Old Timers Racing Club and Historic Speedway Group.

Jeff we were honored to have you and your crew in attendance for this historical event. We at the Old Timers Racing Club want to thank you for your hard work and dedication to preserve racing history. This as I said at the banquet is the best and easiest web site to navigate, believe me if it were not simple I could not get through it. We also would like to thank the Historical Speedway Group for their hard work if it were not for them we could not have made this historical week end happen. We had alot of comments following the laps. One gentleman came up to me and said I am 72 years old and this is the most fun I have had in 30 years after taking his 5 lap spin in the # 43. The older gentleman in the Falcon pace car said as tears welled up in his eyes this sure does bring back alot of good and bad memories. But the funniest was Wild Man Whitey Norman acting like a teenager again and Dewey Livengood in Fred Harbs old #17 Mercury. Fred has worked very hard for the last 2 weeks along with his trusted employees to spuce up and repair the old mercury to get it ready for this event as did many others. We have also been told that we will have at least 3 more cars next year because some said when they left that they were going home and get started on their rides for next year. Again thank you for being their and recording this history. Just one question to you Jeff DO YOU EVER SLEEP??? Mike

Jeff, thanks for you and the crew coming out to the speedway yesterday. And thanks to you too Mike for having the banquet this year at the speedway. I myself had a great time. The best of it was watching all the people that used to race at Occoneechee get to turn some laps once again. I can't imagine what was going through their minds. Again thanks Jeff for having such a great site, I will keep the pictures coming from my collection for all to enjoy.

Oh; by the way, I parked cars for Econic Staley at the track in 1953, I was 13 yrs old, he paid me $5.00, not bad, It's getting better, at this event I got to ride in the Glenn Wood 427 Terino around this great Occoneechee speedway, thank's Harlow Renolds owner of the car. Thank's to all who made this posible. Clyde Mangum
