Which GOT’s (Guys of Today)… Who Drive COT’s… Could Have Been Competitive in COY’s (Cars of Yesterday)
In almost all interviews with the racing stars of the pastI suppose we could call them GOYs (Guys of Yesterday)we ask the question, Of the current Cup drivers, who do you think could have been competitive driving the race cars of the 60s and 70s? Most everyone agrees the race cars that are being driven today do much more of the work than the older cars did. Some say the cars do 60% to 70 % percent of the work. Granted, technology has soared in this area over the past 30 to 40 yearsand the types of drivers seem to have changed as much.It still raises some hair when I remember David Pearson telling about driving the heavy beasts through the dogleg at Daytona without power steering, on narrow bias ply tires, with no spoiler, at 200mph, and hanging on to see where it would end up. I remember Paul Lewis, having not been in a race car in over 20 years, getting out of my Late Model Stock after turning some very quick laps back in 2000 and saying, Its no wonder kids can drive these things today. When we look at many of the drivers of the past, Richard Petty was kind of lanky, but he was very strong. Most of the drivers wereor at least they seem to have been, bigger, bulkier, guys than many of the current drivers. Look at Calethey used to say he was tough as a pine knot. Heck he survived falling out of an airplane with a bad parachute. And Buddy Baker was a giant with a lead foot. Not to mention Tiny Lund. The drivers of todayor the GOTs are more like freaking horse jockeys compared to these guys.So when we ask the question, we expected to get answers that included mostly bigger drivers. Surprisingly after asking the GOYs who they thought could have been competitive driving the COYs, there were only 4 GOTs who made the list. They are Tony Stewart, Carl Edwards, Kyle Bush, and Jimmie Johnson. Tony was the most popular answer with Carl coming in a distant second. Kyle was mentioned twice and Jimmie once. What do you think they see in these guys?
Jeff,I think that with all 4 driver mentioned here, that it would have to be the determination of these guys. They will try to go to the front in any type of car condition. They have the zest and zeal that is not seen often in today's drivers. These guys are not afraid to go for it at any costs.Pastor Ken
