NASCAR "Open to other foreign manufacturers"

by Mike BrudenellDetroit Free PressBROOKLYN, MI -- While Mark Martin was driving to victory in a Chevrolet at Michigan International Speedway on Sunday, the words of NASCAR chairman and CEO Brian France were still reverberating around the media center.A few hours before Martin won the amazing fuel-mileage race, France announced that the governing body of stock-car racing was open to other foreign manufacturers joining Toyota and the Detroit Three in competition. Not so surprising. But with GM forced to make cuts in its racing budget, including eliminating factory support to its Chevy Nationwide Series and Camping World Truck teams, and quite possibly Sprint Cup reductions, the thought of more invaders crossing into holy ground was sacrilegious to many, however desperately the sport needs money.Honda ... Volkswagen ... BMW ...Were these the folks France was talking about joining NASCAR at some point in time?"I'm not going to name names, but we have companies that are interested in particular in developing the North American market as robust as they can, and you are well aware as we are of the manufacturers now producing cars here in America. That was part of the rationale that Toyota used, that being in NASCAR helps them associate more with this market," the Associated Press' Mike Harris quoted France as saying.A group of people in Honda shirts were spotted on the MIS grounds, so where there is smoke, there surely is fire."The question is, with falling revenues in every sports league, what are you going to do to help to figure out the way forward," France added. "So we'll be looking at figuring out, like everyone else in our position, how to operate new opportunities for new companies building brands and services here in NASCAR. Because existing companies, that our teams have in particular relied on, are changing. And that's just the reality."On Saturday night, I joined some race-goers in the infield at MIS. I think they might be less than impressed with France courting more foreign automakers for NASCAR as GM and Chrysler struggle to survive and Ford battles on.Ford, Chevy and Dodge flags flew from motor homes and buses converted into temporary motels. Race fans drank Miller Lite and Budweiser around campfires, and Allman Brothers music could be heard on speakers late into the evening. I didn't see much evidence of Toyota in Turn 3, but it was dark.Perhaps NASCAR should be open to all. Toyota came into the truck series in 2004 and entered Cup competition in 2007. No one marched on Charlotte or Daytona Beach in revolt. But as race fans are losing their jobs at GM and Chrysler plants across the country, and in the Midwest in particular, would it be the right time for Honda, for example, to join what had long been a series for American-made cars?Toyota's here, but it made its appearance in slightly better times.Honda or a German presence? Maybe not so much.

Back to the Future! As we all know the foreign manufacturers were included in NASCAR's past, including MG, Jaguar and Porsche. Funny how these things go in circle's. They were sanctioned out with rule changes as NASCAR began the long climb to a spec series. Now the top brass wants to get them re-involved. Go figure.

Hmmm, in the sports page todat was speculation about Dana Patrick. A Honda driver, wondering if its time to change series. I wonder.............And I'm sure it will help her out that she called Penske and Ganassi racing lower teams.

Hey maybe we can sell those fly swatter whips they use . And we can put their numbers on it. We could be on to something here. Team Alabebe swatters 21.50. Please make sure to look for the official Nascar logo.

Y'all know, among the most well known components GM ever made was the famous "double hump" heads!

Yes, Ms. Patrick will be in NASCAR. Been saying that for years. She will make millions, NASCAR will make a few million (not as much as in the past after they remove the current huge overhead), and it will be a hot ticket for awhile. NASCAR will pull out the funny time clock and bliss will set in while waiting for the next "hype".And, all of this started when Jack Pennington got the shaft and I know the old timers know what I am taking about. That is when the "Last of the Bold Breed" died at NASCAR. And, that is when the decline started that continues to this day.Photo of "Mr. The King" and the man who said what he thoughtand told NASCAR to stick it and never did another lap at the top level after being robbed of the "Rookie of the Year" title. They do not make them like Jack anymore.

Two humps....I think....hmmm. Lemme think about that. Dirt for sure.Bottom line is NASCAR has to bring in new blood...er...ahh...money to replace what their loosing. You can bet there will be a Saturn in the field...soon...I don't care what Roger says to the press. It'll happen sooner than you think. Honda and Nissan are just around the next corner....wouldn't be surprised to see the Beemers in there as well. Then......will have a "spec" motor....like Indy. Then the only thing that will help a fan tell one from another will be the decals. The big-time marketing gurus say that being in NASCAR will still be a good deal for an auto maker....cause of the "brand-loyal-fan-base". Ask yourself this question......will those fans be as loyal in a "faceless" sport? You might remember one of my earlier articles about this subject. All these marketing stats were created when we were running Pontiacs, Olds, Chevys, fords, Chryslers, Plymouths...etc...with drivers the likes of Richard Petty, Junior Johnson, David Pearson,...and even up until the ealry nineties. When asked if "win on Sunday sells on Monday" still applies...the head racing dude at ford...stuttered and said..." well we get more hits on our web site on Monday". The NASCAR folks heard..."Yes"...not what he actually said.No doubt the sport will survive for a long time to come...but I think the rewards for being involved at the top level...for a sponsor....will deminish with time. I think future fans will "revolve" through the sport. I can't see how making the cars identical...while being driven by guys who are starting look the same.....and creating a situation where it will be next to impossible to pass will do anything but weaken the sport. Just wait....next thing you know they'll be putting restrictor plates on smaller tracks to "bunch up" the field.....so they don't have to throw so many debris cautions....they'll be able to through em for wrecks. After all many of the new fans want to see more wrecks. These are just my opinions and not necessarily the opinions of RacersReunion, its sponsors, and associates....lol. And by the way...I'd like to thank all our sponsors!

Michigan is not the best place to talk about imports and racing in the same sentence. Maybe in the South where the imports are built. Not Michigan. Remember when Pinks All Out came to Milan Dragway? Not an import in sight! Probably wouldn't have a car to take home. Ford, GM and Chrysler are Michigan. We're hurting so damn bad up here.

Now I'm even less interested in NASCAR, maybe this is a backward way of thinking but"BUYING FOREIGN PRODUCTS DOES NOT PUT FOOD ON AMERICAN TABLES". I do believe that the foreign automobiles are a good quality product but I have no desire to purchase one, I believe in buying AMERICAN MADE products. Everyday I see more and more foreign cars on the road and I think by buying them are those Americans puting a razor to their own throats. Think about it ! I know that "you should never say never" because you may have to eat your own words some day. The only way that I will ever buy a foreign car is when there are no more American made cars left to buy. Sad to say but I think that day is closer than we think.

Rest assured, Nascar is headed to an overhead cam, fuel injected spec engine in identical spec cars in hopes of making it easier to attract other manufacturers who have never had a "normal"...lol , "naturally aspirated", V8 engine. This model already exists with Indy...and has proven that it does not produce the same level of "brand loyalty" that "used" to exist in Nascar. The value of a major sponsorship in Indy is a fraction of that in Nascar. Some experts are now saying that Indy ...might be a better buy...because of the lower investment required to get into a major sponsorship position in that league.I still think the question Nascar has to handle is "What happens to brand loyalty in a faceless sport?" I personally do not think the direction they are headed in will accomplish the long-term financial gains they seek. If sponsors realize "the actual" numbers of fans who do not give a rat's petootee about whether their brand is on a cup car ...or not...they will continue to back down their involvement in Nascar. This econmic recession we have just been through (or that we are still going through) is a major blow for Nascar's long-range hopes. 'Cause it will give many sponsors an idea of what it's like to be out of Nascar. The path GM chose years ago worked in previous economic eras....but clearly does not work now. When they reorganize as a leaner company with new goals they will be stronger for it. I foresee a complete reorganization/overhaul of Nascar in the future...for the same reasons. But, the long range version of the sport wil still be "foreign" to those of us who grew up with the earlier version of the sport. I think (only my opinion) the only way this sport can return to it's former strength is when they actually race cars we can buy. But I think (again...only my opinion), the manufactures will have to produce a street version of a car we would want to drive....because it won on Sunday. Go find me a two door, rear whee drive, V8 carburated Impala. I'd have to check...but I believe one would have to go back a few decades to find one.Having said all that...I think the long-term solution lies in a totally differant area than is currently being pursued. I have heard Brian France say, "We are working with the team owners and sponsors to give them what they need and want." The fans of this sport drove it to where it is/was. If they are not buying the sponosr's products...the value of sponsorship goes down the tubes. Without the sponsorship, who is going to pay these guys millions of dollars for "loosing" races?Brand loyalty is earned....kind of like respect. It begins with guys who earn their position in racing...kind of like...go fast or go home.Hope I didn't ruffle too many feathers...but I would love to have the same passion for this sport I used to have...but I don't. Yep, I still watch...in between naps. And I realize the reason I sleep through most races "may" because I am a geezer. We geezer's need our naps. All this is why I started RacersReunion. I love meeting and getting to hear stories from my heroes. I love getting the opportunity to let them know there are millions of us "older" fans out there (and some younger ones) who like hangin with 'em. I love letting them know we appreciate the contributions they made to give us a sport we were so passionate about. I would love to see what we have started grow to a level that extends the celebrity of retired drivers and gives them an opportunity to gain from their past contributions. I would love to be able to not only bring recognition to their contributions and needs, but to create avenues to finacially assist those who need it. I guess one could say that I have found a new passion. I have not yet taken a nap during one of our events...or while I'm watching our interviews. I find myself driving thousands of miles for the opportunity to be among my heroes. Kind of make you go....Hmmmm.

Wouldn't (that is Southern) it be nice to turn on the TV and see an interview with a driver that could not talk (Morgan Shepard), or an interview with a driver that could drive the Hell out of a race car but would tell you where to go in a heart beat (Jack Pennington).I hate hypocrisy and modern day motorsports (all forms) is full of it.Jeff and Tim, you have hit the nail on the head again, Thanks so much.My opinion on the "EOT", engine of tomorrow is the diesel. Audi started this trend and was able to produce torque and horsepower (with no smoke) and blow away all the competition. We will see.Henry
