6th Annual Augusta Vintage Natinals
We had a great time at the fabulous Diamond Lakes Reagional Park. There's not a better venu around for festival. Henry and the AIRPS gang do a great job and have made sure genreations to come will not forget the racing heritage that began on those grounds. Thanks AIRPS for allowing us to participate in your event....and thanks to all the great folks to came out to support the event. I also learned how to properly pronounce Johnny Mallonee's name as well as getting to see him and the Legend square off and settle their differences. Come to think of it...I don't think anything was actually settled. We will have our interviews from this event up soon.
The personnel behind making the Diamond Lakes Park into what is today have taken dedication to a higher level because although almost all the original circuit has been reclaimed either mother nature or the development industry of today. We should give thanks to them for allowing the racing of yesterday to still live today and tomorrow at this great facility. The stone wall in the pictures is only the beginning of what is purposed for the future so many more dreams will be fulfilled in the future.I feel honored to be a small part of this years reunion and hope to return in the future for more memory trips down the short part of the track that is very long on memories oh what-----------------------memories
We had FRENZY outside with the Car Show folks, we had Tim and Johnny running all over the place, we had Jeff Gilder and Racers Reunion interviewing eveyone but the janitor (well, that may have happen while I was in the restroom), we had the lovely Carol building up steam for the Rex White one off print while her husband Michael was thinking about the next driver to honor in print, we had social time the evening before, we had MR. REX WHITE being honored while Francis Flock charmed the crowd, we had drivers giving autographs while cameras rolled just a few few away, we had folks enjoying beautiful weather while viewing race cars and show cars, we had a bloodmobile taking life from one individual to give to another, we had folks playing tennis, we had adults playing baseball, we had young folks playing softball, we had food vendors and snow cone vendors taking care of body needs, we had the air conditioners woking overtime in the 60,000 square foot Diamond Lakes Community Center, we had young butts sitting in the Diamond Lakes Library, we had a ten foot tall, fifteen foot wide monument sitting proudly in the sun, we had an old race track still intact with life, we had Motorsport Fans eager to meet former drivers and former drivers eager to meet Motorsport Fans....................but none of this is more important that the reason for all of this.............the "5Wkids Outdoor Learning Area" sitting just a few feet from where all of this was taking place. Some granite seating is already in place at this learning area for the young folks to someday ask "Who, What, When, Where and Why" about our sport! We need more of that granite seating so more young folks will ask more questions about this burning feeling that any individual that visits this web site has in his/her belly. If that feeling was not there you would not be here. Keep "5WKids Outdoor Learning Area" in your memory one for simple reason................that memory is going to be recalled many, many more times over the next few years as our group and this group MUST get the younger folks involved for all the reasons that took up the first part of this information piece. If that does not happen then this is nothing more than a fad and my belief is that this is a lot more than a fad. A very lot more.Jeff, thank you so much!
It was great to see the fans and the drivers. Total SHOCK on my part when I was asked to autograph a picture and a poster. Next time I will bring a small tent for shade and all will be perfect. I know we yell when it rains and yell when it is sunny but that is what we did back in the day also.Hope to see you in 2010!!
