The Save The Speedway (STS) group is on top of most activities at the former Speedway. I have requested input from them. http://www.savethespeedway.net/

God bless him and I hope it works out. What a place to have a race! Didn't Bruton Smith buy this place to shut it down?Pete

To add to what Henry has mentioned, it was two years ago September when Mitchell expressed interest in the speedway. Supposedly he had the money, we're not too certain about that, but also he didn't have much of a plan. He did attend a racing heritage celebration in Wilkesboro on Sept 29, 11 years to the date of the final race at the track, then attended a post-celebration party held by Terri Parsons for the Save The Speedway group. Several questions were asked, comments made, but as I mentioned, it really didn't seem like he had much of a plan. Shortly after, all his hype faded away. Just recently, an individual by the name of Charles Collins made an effort to bring activities to the track, but lack of funding and plans made his efforts short lived.Yes Pete, Bruton along with Bob Bahre (former New Hampshire owner) bought the place, but only for the race DATES. They had no interest in keeping racing there. Bruton took a date and opened Texas in 1997 and Bahre added a second date to New Hampshire in 1997.We're all for seeing the track come back to life. It will take some $$$ and someone with a solid plan. Until that happens, we are enjoying the history the place has given us. We at Save The Speedway haven't forgotten, and we do appreciate that you all haven't forgotten either!Rick

Rick, thanks for jumping on board here at Racers Reunion.I want to let everyone know that Rick is the premier short track fan here in the United States. He and I go back a number of years and we actually documented several tracks here in Georgia together and he has attended several of the events here in Augusta. You will not find a more dedicated Historic/Vintage Motorsports fan.Jeff, you got to get this man on video!Rick, go to the video section for overview of the Augusta event. Jeff and the crew did a fantastic supportive role. It does not get any better than this!

Thanks Rick, I didn't remember Bob Bahre was involved. This track was an important piece of Nascar history and for 2 guys to ruin it for so many fans just to get Nascar dates just doesn't set well. I guess as long as it helped them it must be okay. Money well spent Mr. Smith and Mr.Bahre. Nevermind the fans!Pete

Just to add to what Rick and Henry was talking about on here, I am the web guy for Save The Speedway. Worth did talk with us and a real estate agent to try and get the track open but a few weeks after making an announcement he disappeared. No one has heard much about him since then.
