Jim, this poster advertises a very historic race - the 1964 Capital City 300 at Richmond. Car owner Cotton Owens came out of retirement and fielded a second car in order to show his driver, David Pearson in the #6 C.O.G. Dodge how to make smooth pit stops. Cotton, in his #5 Dodge wound up beating David, who was second. Although the poster advertises the date as September 13th, due to rain the race was held on Monday night, September 14, 1964. Note, also, that the race name on the poster is mis-spelled - it was always C A P I T A L C I T Y 300 with an "a" not an "o." In later years, the Southern Oxygen Co. listed as a ticket location would be the prime sponsor of the famous #01 baby blue Emanuel Zervakis Late Model Sportsman cars driven by Sonny Hutchins out of Richmond. A newspaper photo posted on the Cotton Owens Garage web site shows Cotton crossing the finish line for the win in the race advertised on Jim Wilmore's poster. Note the two mistakes in the newspaper cutline - #1, the race was in Richmond, Va., not West Va. and #2 the race was a NASCAR Grand National event, not a USAC race. The Southern Oxygen sponsored NASCAR Late Model Sportsman car out of Richmond owned and built by Emanuel Zervakis and driven by Sonny Hutchins.
