The track and/or USAC promoted that Indy car regulars Billy Vukovich, Sam Sessions and Jigger Sirois planned to race. As it turned out, only Sirois participated. He started at the tail of the field - 22nd - and improved only one spot after exiting the race after 32 laps. I haven't found any info why the other names didn't race. Butch Hartman, the reigning USAC stock car champion from 1971, also raced. But he lost a rear end after only one lap, and he finished 22nd, dead last.
The McWilliams raced to the win was formerly the Ray Nichels' #99 STP Plymouth that Fred Lorenzen raced in the 1971 Daytona 500. Porter Lanigan was the car owner, and the number was changed from 99 to 27. Based on this picture, however, the car was still painted STP day-glo red. This photo, credited to Dennis Piefer, was taken at the USAC race in Knoxville, Iowa on June 11 where McWilliams won again. From DirtFans.com .

The speedway was apparently converted from dirt to asphalt shortly after this race. Later, the track was renamed Queen City Speedway. Based on this short video, the track was level in 2008.
