The track recruited car owners and drivers who didn't make the Indy 500 field to race in the "major car" race on Memorial Day, May 30th - the same day as the 500 at the Brickyard.

May 30 - 500 mile "major car" race was won by Bud Rose.
May 31 - 500 mile midget race was won by Allen Heath.
June 1 - The GN race was won by Eddie Gray
The three days of racing, low attendance, and show money paid to Indy 500 DNQ teams resulted in a hefty loss for the track promoters.

Incredible capture of racing history, TMC. The "race cars" show on Friday must have been something else, with an antique former movie car taking the win over outdated Grand Prix cars and Indy non-qualifiers. I just wrote about the stock car portion, specifically the presence in the field of a Goliath, maybe that German make's only appearance in a NASCAR race. It's hard to imagine midgets surviving 500 miles on a road course - this whole thing must have been cooked up by someone with P.T. Barnum's vision but none of his common sense. Still, I wish I'd been there.
