This July race is mislabeled on many websites (and presumably in Greg Fielden's Forty Years of Stock Car Racing) as the Buddy Shuman 250. The first Shuman Memorial was held in November 1956. The second was scheduled for November 10, 1957, but was canceled because of a flu outbreak in the area. As a result, Hickory only hosted the one GN race that year.

The Asian Flu Pandemic of 1957 was one of 3 Twentieth Century worldwide flu pandemics and I remember it well. Our entire family was infected. We were all in bed with metal wash pails beside us because nobody could stop vomiting. The Asian Flu Pandemic of 1957 peaked in the United States in October, shortly before Hickory's scheduled running of the 1957 Buddy Shuman Memorial race. http://www.flu.gov/pandemic/history/
