Hi Bill,
The Friday program was great... I loved the background noise as it really added to the atmosphere and intent of the broadcast.
When you read the list of inductees, I was personally thrilled to hear that Dickie Estevez, Bob Maxey, and Tod Mack were installed. As I have told you, I feel like I lived in that area during the time they were racing as Woody and Ray Ray always talked of their friendships with those folks. I spoke with Tod often as he would occasionally appear at the various NHRA events throughout the country and would find us at the car between the rounds drinking beer and benching.
It was through these guys that I realized that the real hard core drag racing was over on the East coast and not the fabled California. Having places like Aquasco, MIR, 75-80, Capitol, Cecil County, York, The Grove, Connecticut Dragway, Great Meadows, NJ... all of these strips, in such a close proximity, provided mini National events every week. Drag racing heaven for sure. Ray Ray talked about Bob Maxey all of the time... Bob built the engine in Ray's Grand Prix that was his daily driver and the car would do 150 MPH with no problem as it had a really high ratio rear axle... I know of two occasions where he dusted off the Florida Highway Patrol during the Gators and he always gave credit to "My boy, Bob Maxey. He did it for me again."
I hope someday that Ray Ray and Woody would be considered for a posthumous designation as Legends of MIR.
You've got a lot of famous/great racers up there Bill. People that shaped my life and made me realize that drag racing was something that I would never grow out of. All of our lives have been enriched because of them. I can't imagine a life that didn't include the excitement of the noise, artwork, and friendships that I truly treasure, along with the wonderful memories that are a result of the drag racing culture...
Thanks for your great radio show....
Very Sincerely,
Jay
