Neat photo. Interesting seeing a #1 car on the track that's not a Winston show car. Didn't happen a lot during RJR's reign. Hoss Ellington's cars were notable exceptions. Looks like Richard Howard was car owner for this pic.

Are we sure this is Charlotte??? I can't think of any section at Charlotte that had 2 rows of guard rail and this picture looks like it was taken on the straight a way at a smaller track. The track look too narrow to be CMS. I could be wrong.

Hi all. Now mind you, I was never to either place, I've led a pretty sheltered existence up here in the midwest and am more of an expert in the the Central Wisconsin racing scene in the late 60's, 70's and 80's and a USAC Stock Car Divsion specialist, but I don't think this is Richmond. If you look at the stance of the cars, this is a superspeedway or longer track for sure, this is definately a big track setup with the chassis height at the rear being as high as it was. Plus Richard's exhaust makes it appear that he was running a pretty rich mixture through his carburetor, note the black stain, so while a superspeedway, it was one you weren't flat out around the track but were braking and doing some hard accelerating. Rule out Daytona, Talledega, probably Michigan, Atlanta, Rockingham, Texas. The track is obviously not banked enough to be Dover, I don't think there are any seats close enough to the track for it to be Pocono, this is a quandry. It fact the guardrails and closeness of the fans make it look more like a short track, but it simply can't be given what I can deduce from the cars themselves. When you add it all up, it probably has to be either Darlington or Charlotte. And in that Billy I think won this as a one time ride, at Charlotte, which had been done with Wendell Scott not long before this either I have to conclude its Charlotte. I don't remember from watching on TV or from any pictures I've seen, any part of Charlotte that looked like this I admit, but I think it has to be. I do remember Charlotte being relative narrow in places though, surprisingly so. What do you think Barb and Billy?God Bless.Dave Bayer

Dave , the track is as listed on the picture Charlotte Motor Speedway. Don't know where Richmond was even mentioned. The only place the # 1 Big Chance Special was run was CMS in 1973. Thanks so much for your interest and comments.God loves you and so do we,Billy abd Barbara

Hi Richard, thanks for your comment about the # 1 Big Chance Special. The track is definitely Charlotte Motor Speedway, the only place the car ever run. You must remember this was in 1973!! You will eventually see a picture of Richard and Billy at one spot on the track, with part of where the stands are now, it was a grassy knoll. If you check out some of our pictures of the car # 16, you will see CMS in the background and you won't believe it either. There's no condos nor large press box or anything. Go to Billy's racing photos and look at them.God bless and we love you,Billy and Barbara

Happy to know my deductions were right Billy and Barb. Don't figure I'm much of a Sherlock Holmes, lol, the old noodle gets a little scrambled sometimes even, but I know, though far from all, my goodness, but a good bit about racing and its history. It had to be Charlotte! We love you guys and all the rest who commented here too.Dave and Annette Bayer

My apologies Billy. you say it is Charlotte and I will not disagree. A comment about the paint scheme on that car. If I am not mistaken the striping mimicks the factory sport version of the Malibu. Cales car had the same scheme except reversed opposed to Billy's hot rod. Thanks for the look back Mr. Scott. I love this kinda of thing.

I was wrong, I didn't do my research before I made a guess. Charlotte for sure. Thanks for the great picture. Did you enjoy running here as much as you did on dirt? How difficult was this car to drive? Were you treated well by the Cup guys?Great eye David, and well put.
