Work is already underway to prepare for August's Lakewood Speedway Reunion at the Georgia Racing Hall of Fame, which leads me to this week's column over at
www.georgiaracinghistory.com .2009 Georgia Racing Hall of Fame inductee Tommie Irvin has said many times that his win at the famed speedway in Atlanta in 1955 was the biggest of his career. So this week we bring you portions of an interview with Mr. Irvin about Lakewood, including the day legendary Georgia racer Bob Flock decided he was going to race, no matter what a city ordinance barring former moonshine runners had to say about it! Mr. Irvin also gives us his insight into the history of the great speedway as well as why the track is no longer with us.You can read all about it at
www.georgiaracinghistory.com !In other news, the Georgia Racing Hall of Fame NEEDS YOUR HELP! The Hall runs entirely off of volunteer help and on donations. Our volunteers are the most dedicated and hardest working you'll find anywhere, but they can't do it alone. The Hall is in need of volunteers to help give tours and man the souvenir kiosk at the hall. If each member of this mailing list could find just one day a month to help volunteer at the hall, we could easily be fully staffed and be able to extend the Hall's operation hours. By volunteering, you are helping to keep the Hall operational and helping to keep the history of Georgia Racing alive. We know that the fans of Georgia racing love the history and the heritage that the Hall of Fame is working to preserve, and we hope that some of you can step up to help us keep things rolling. If you're interested and you can volunteer, send me an email at raceinfoga@gmail.com, and we'll get the ball rolling.Happy Birthday wishes go out this week on Feb. 24 to Harry Gailey and on Feb. 25 in memory of Davey Allison (1961-1993)Thanks everybody, and have a great weekend!Brandon ReedGeorgia Racing History.com
