Racing historian and GRH.com contributor Mike Bell has estimated that there are a total of around 175 race tracks around the state of Georgia, operational and long since closed combined. This week, he takes a look at one of those tracks that are lost to us over at
Georgia Racing History.com .
Opening in April of 1953, the Columbus Super Speedway played host to NASCAR sportsman events, as well as to local racers and drivers from all over the state who would travel south to take on the paper-clip shaped track. Drivers such as Charlie Mincey, Harvey Jones, Sam McQuagg and Eddie MacDonald would to battle on the tight quarter-mile each week.
The track closed after the 1959 season, but we remember it today with Mike's great story on the Columbus Super Speedway. You can read all about it over at
Georgia Racing History.com .
Happy Birthday wishes go out this week on Aug. 22 in memory of Bob Burcham (1935-2009) and on Aug. 23 to Anthony Lazzaro.
Thanks to all, and have a great weekend!
