This week over at
Georgia Racing History.com , we take a look at the history of one of the great tracks in Georgia history.
Opening in 1960, Atlanta Motor Speedway has hosted two events each year for what is now known as NASCAR's Sprint Cup Series.
But next year, the track will be cut back to just one event, the Labor Day night race.
With that in mind, we take a look back at the history of the speedway in a column that explores it's beginnings as Atlanta International Raceway all the way up to modern day. You can read more over at
Georgia Racing History.com .
In other news, preperations are underway for the eighth annual Induction Banquet for the
Georgia Racing Hall of Fame . This year, five new members will be added to the ranks of Georgia's greats, including Ted Edwards, Ernie Elliott, Jack Etheridge, Laverne Kendrick and Jerry Wimbish. The banquet will be held on the evening of Oct. 22, and will include some new features that we've never had at any previous event, including a special recognition of all our past inductees! Word came down this week that 2009 GRHOF inductee Katron Sosebee suffered a heart attack. Please keep Katron and his family in your thoughts and prayers over the next week.
We also learned this week that longtime track announcer Perry Holman passed away. Holman's voice was regularly heard at the Talladega Short Track, along with being heard over at Rome Speedway in Georgia. All of us here at GRH.com pass on our condolences to Perry's family and friends.
Happy Birthday wishes go out this week on Sept. 7 to Donnie Allison and on Sept. 8 to Frank Warren and Randy Payne.
Thanks everybody, and have a great weekend!
