This is one of the reasons I love this site, I can find lots of folks that are Long Time racing fans that truely understand what NASCAR was like in the sports earlier days. I know I don't go back as far many of you, but I still have a lot of respect for all drivers and teams from years gone by. It is amazing to me when I talk to people who claim to know everything about this sport just how many have only followed the sport for since the early 90's. Some are older than I but never bothered to look back at the history of the sport. This is my biggest gripe, those who truely believe that NASCAR only existed because of Dale Earnhardt. Dale was 'The Man', but this sport was growing long before he ever climbed into Ed Negre's
#8 Dodge back in 1975 ( a race I was at). People tend to minimize the efforts, devotion and sacrifices of the early heros of this sport. This site has be a blessing to me. If I talk about some of the drivers from the past here, the vast majority knows who I'm talking about. These are "My People"! Race fans that remember chrome bumpers, chin spoilers and Blue Dot tires. Fans that remember racing before window nests. GAS CAPS on a short chain. Roof Loose, Door Push. Flat bed haulers with a tire rack and only one car. These are my people. I became a fan back in 1972 but I have always loved to look back and study the characters that helped to make this sport what it is.Thank you to all that share your memories with me. I never leave this page disappointed.
I certainly don't have Tim's long distinguished list. but I started following Nascar about 1962 from TV. When Michigan International Speedway opened in 1968 I was there at the Indycar race. In June 1969 the first nascar race was held there and I was in the bleachers. Watched Cale and LeeRoy wreck on the last lap and Cale was able to continue for the win. There actually was racing before Dale Earnhardt. One question for Tim, I didn't hear about the Myers boy. What happened? This is the great part of RR. Learning when at one point I thought I knew everything!LOLPete in Michigan, the next stop for Cup.
Tim, this is the car Fonty was driving when Myers was killed. He was driving Herb Thomas' car when this happened. From Craig Bontrager. I didn't know it was Chocolate Myers Dad.Pete
Thanks for the stories... this is what makes this site so great. Keep em coming, I'm like a sponge.
