Super Speedway No More
Lets face it, racing at Talladega and Daytona is a thing of the past. The cars are too fast and the seats are too close to let them race at these two tracks. And what good is it to slow them down any slower than they already are? It makes no sence to have the 2 fastest tracks and make them run at slower speeds than they do at Charlotte and Atlanta. That is not "Super Speedway" racing! The racing is so bad that nobody is happy with the end results. The Drivers hate these races and NASCAR can't do anything to make the races any better and the fans sure don't like them.NASCAR teams have reached the point where they can't be allowed to run at the tracks full potential and the new rules have destroyed the sport we all fell in love with. Racing at the 2 fastest tracks is over and it would make more sence to move these dates back to tracks like Rockingham and N. Wilksboro so we could enjoy racing once again.Simple truth, lower the banking, or downsize the motors or move the dates to other tracks. I don't want to sit through another one of these races.Bumpertag in S. Carolina
Talladaga and Dayona could be brought back to life with very little NA$CAR investment. Simply add the infield course that is already in place to the track length. For a guy that loves to see race cars go left and right this would be pure heaven.Photo is the Daytona layout. And, the NASCAR fan that MUST see every inch of the track is rewarded.
I vote with Henry. Use the road course. Besides, I'd hate to see the Daytona 24 hrs go away just because NASCAR can't figure out how to do it right.
Simple remedy is to put a road course in on back stretch where cars have to slow down, get off the speedway and navigate a short series of turns then re-enter the speedway --you would only loose a small section of the backstretch but at same token you would take the follow the leader aspect out of the race--you would in a sense show which car has got the horsepower, which driver can handle the road course, which team builds the best car for braking and then they can actually go out and race and touch and rub put on a real show thats worthy of a person paying $50.00 plus for a ticket--my opinion but what do I know,im an old driver thats content to play in the dirt ---------------------------memories
I have been fortunate enough to run the Daytona "Road Course" and it is a ton of fun for the driver and a crowd pleaser. And, as Johnny says, the layout is a great equalizer.Plus, you can throw away those dang plates with the little holes that go on top of the carbs.
Thats good unless you don't like road racing. We have more road racing now than I like. I rather see them lower the banking and let them run without the plates. The racing would be much better if the banking was down to around 18-20 degress, kindda like Richmond. Super fast straights and handling corners, that would get me excited again.
If it were like Richmond, I would agree.....but my fear is it would be more like Fontana...which to me is one of the most boring tracks on the circuit. The only way to make it like Richmond is to build 1/3 the size.
I agree! The problem is.... France doesn't own any of those tracks, Joe.
Hey Troy, I like your passion, but I don't like road racing. I can tolerate them but I really wish the Cup series only ran one a year. I know I'm kindda strange but I don't like Bristol, Daytona or Talladega. The best track out there is Richmond followed closely by Darlington. Skill is a must at these tracks and it should be that way at all.Jeff, I see what you are saying, Daytona and Talladega with low banking could very well be nothing more than another Fontana, and I think we all agree we don't need that. What to do, what to do.
Weekend racing has been part of our lives for 46 years.......Sunday's single file run around the track was not racing........Soon National Sponsors will say enough.......we stayed home to watch. Glad we did..... It was not worth the drive to Alabama to witness the drivers and fans frustration again.
I have been stating for many years now that the speeds are high and that racing without plates is a thing of the past. This is to protect the fans, first and formost, but also the drivers. Well, NASCAR's attempt to ensure a safe race resulted in one of the worst races I've witnessed in some time. I never thought I'd be saying this, but here goes...NASCAR has developed the COT to ensure safety for the drivers and I think they did a good job so far. Now what to do for the fans. Lets remove any seats that can be in danger of a flying car, increase the fencing and increase the size of the restrictor plate opennings and lets get back to racing. Let the cars run around 205-210 MPH and back the fans up to a safe point and let go racing. The cars can protect the drivers much better today than any time in the sports history. Racing will always be a dangerous sport and every driver knows the risk. I'm not looking for a "Blood Sport" but the slower big pack of cars is, I believe, more dangerous than the faster group of 3-8 cars running hard for the win, like it use to be. Lets face it, not every driver out there has the talent, or the marbles, to run at the faster speeds. This has always been part of the sport.Did everyone hear Mikie Waltrip Monday when he described racing at Talladega? He made more sence and truely explained the racing today. " When you drive into a turn on the streets and you see a sign that says "Curve, 45 MPH", you go 45 MPH and its easy. You go 60 MPH and it is a little more difficult, but it can be done with no problems. At Talladega we dive into turn 1 and we should see a sign that says, " Curve, 230 MPH" and we're doing it at 190 MPH. What we're doing is easy. It's not the speed thats the problem, it's the huge packs of cars that are the problem."To get back to what this sport once was the cars have to be seperated into smaller groups and the speed must increase if they are to continue to race at Daytona and Talladega. The fans and sponsors will not tolerate many more races like we just had. Unfortunately, I'm a fan of the Ol NASCAR and I'm hooked for life... to a point. I won't buy tickets anymore, but I do support the sponsors and the drivers when I can. I'm just hoping for better days ahead.Bumpertag
Ya know...stock cars...real stock cars... just aren't meant to go 200mph..so there is no need for a high-banked 2 plus mile oval race track for stock cars. But....now that they are not running "stock" cars...they may as well go ahead and add a front wing...a few more flaps....and a propeller or two....whatever it takes to keep them planted to the track and take off the plates. They might eventually go 300. I'd probably watch that...at least a time or two.
Maybe it's time for NASCAR to allow "Ground Effects Tunnels" to suck these cars down at these high speed tracks. Not sure how I really feel about this, but it's got to be better than what we have now!!!Good points Jeff.
At this point, they may as well do that BT...they are not stock cars anymore. Like I said I'd probably watch 'em...wouldn't dare get in one. Shew...can you imagine what it would be like to hit a wall at 300.
I'm afraid it would look a lot like Mikie at Bristol.
Well, I keep thinking back to the early days when the sport was growing big and the boys/girls were racing anywhere and anytime.Variety is the spice of life and the NA$CAR of today is riding a worn out horse. Road racing (where the stuborn NA$CAR fan can see the entire track) could be a jump start "Back To The Future".Heck, even most of the 1.5 mile ovals have an infield course already in place. I did Charlotte (still can not call it Lowes) using the oval and infield section and it produced a lot of variety..................just what NA$CAR needs this day and time.Bring on the Road Courses!
