Kyle Petty 1st Cup Win
It was a frigid Richmond, Virginia winter day in February 1986 when Kyle Petty scored his first Cup win. Petty threaded the needle through the aftermath of a Dale Earnhardt / Darrell Waltrip crash at the old Richmond Fairgrounds half-mile layout driving the Wood Brothers / 7-Eleven Ford Thunderbird. I got to share victory lane with the group as Motorsports Coordinator for 7-Eleven. I'm standing next to Glen Wood in this b&w photo from Getty Images / Racing Photo Archives. In the comments below, I'm wearing the red jacket in the color photo from Wood Brothers Racing.
That's me in the red jacket standing next to Glen Wood 1986 Kyle Petty 1st win.
And the winner's trophy was on display at the Petty Museum in Randleman. I suppose it'll be on display once again after the transition of the museum back to Level Cross is complete.
Petty's Garage (and soon the museum) is at 311 Branson Mill Rd. Up until now, Lee and Elizabeth's house has sat vacant since their deaths. But I understand folks can walk through part of it in connection with a museum visit.
I've shared before on these pages the location of the winning sponsor trophy from Kyle's first Cup win. It resides in a closet in an unused upstairs bedroom.
