Phoenix 1984 Winston West
From photographer David Allio, that's me wearing my 7-Eleven "Go to Heck" cap presenting the Winston West winner trophy to Bill Schmitt at the 7-Eleven NASCAR 250 in November 1984 at Phoenix International Raceway. The pretty lady is Miss Winston, Karen Beasley. This race was traditionally run the weekend after the season ending Riverside Cup/GN race.
In 1984 I sponsored young rookie, Derrike Cope with 7-Eleven colors on the Winston West NASCAR circuit driving George Jefferson Thunderbirds - often the only Ford in the field. All Derrike needed at Phoenix was a decent finish to not only win Rookie of the Year, but the Winston West Championship. A 16th place finish due to mechanical issues relegated Cope to 2nd in the final standings, just 5 points behind the late Jim Robinson, whose daughter is a member at this site. By the way, Cope spent the night before the race rebuilding Tim Richmond's engine. When he came East to run in Cup, he didn't want folks to know he was also an engine builder. That's Derrike in the #95 racing #41 Kevin Terris at Phoenix in another 1984 David Allio photo.
The chassis in the #95 had been well worn by Elmo Langley before it found its way to Washington State.
