Love the Petty fan in the background - with the cowboy hat on the dash. These were days before Charlie 1 Horse hats though. Guessing this is 1979 since Dale's quarters are empty.

Didn't know it belonged to Dick May. Was pretty sure it wasn't the King's hat since he really didn't start sporting cowboy hats until Kyle Petty's Boot Barn opened in 1980 or so. And even then, it took him a while to wear them regularly. Still, I found the foreshadowing with the hat in an STP Dodge van pretty funny.

Was this photo taken the same year / race as the Petty Monte Carlo shot you uploaded? If so - and if its 1978 - I think this might be Dave Marcis instead of Earnhardt in the Osterland car.
