Another One Done
Hello friends and future friends.Well, I just put the finishing touches on my January 2010 issue of DRAG RACER Magazine and it was a push. Almost eight weeks ago, I tried to "get ahead" on this one (LOL), but every time I turned around, I was waiting for photos, information, or all of the above. Unfortunately, that pushed things right up to the deadline.Anyway, I'm fortunate to be able to tell the world about the new Edelbrock/Musi "Big Victor" cylinder heads. The end result is a total re-design of GM's venerable 18-degree race head that's light years ahead of every other casting out there, thanks to the pros that took on the project, which included Dan and Wayne Jesel. I'm proud to tell this story, as it's the first major editorial that's been done. And in the process, it was really cool to learn about everything that's been corrected -- things that have been wrong with these heads since GM first introduced them 15 or 20 years ago. The first car to test a Musi-built 632-inch big-block Chevy with Big Victor heads is a Northeast-based Top Dragster. After more than 50 runs, the valve lash didn't change! That's how stable the corrected valve train geometry is.During production, NHRA asked if I'd consider doing a story to celebrate the history of the Winternationals, since the 2010 version will mark its 50th anniversary. Of course I would! Naturally, it includes a few wild old photos and first-person recollections I solicited from some of the sport's most respected drivers. However, I put a little different twist on those memories and tried to have some fun with it. I hope it's well received.Well, this weekend, there's a Division 7 race at Auto Club Famoso Raceway in Bakersfield that also includes the annual Chuy's Fuel Altered Classic, set to go off under the lights on Saturday night. Of course, next month is the California Hot Rod Reunion, also at Bakersfield. A couple of weeks after that is the national event in Las Vegas, then the SEMA Show, and the Auto Club Finals at Pomona. No rest for the weary, but I'm lucky to still have a job. I'd better sign off, as there's bound to be something that needs doing. Cheers!
