I NEVER THOUGHT THIS DAY WOULD COME FOR ME, BUT IT HAS.

Pay attention Mr. Legend! BB has given you good advice! And W, thanks for letting everyone know I managed to hit the only wall on the track.
Here is where NASCAR.com reported it. http://www.nascar.com/news/110629/dearnhardtjr-daytona-win-2001/
There are other news reports of it all over the web still....as there were when it occurred. I remember hearing about it then as well. Sounds pretty real to me.
Remember, he was popular then...but no where near being "the most recognizable and prominent face at Daytona...yet" I think the security guard's job would be in jeopardy even today if he didn't do the same.
Seems to me it was late 80's...maybe early 90's when UMP (the first I can remember) began sanctioning open wheel modified...and it did begin in the Midwest and move east....prolly west, too. I was running street stocks with Jimmy Owens and made the switch to asphalt late models. A lot of guys, including Jimmy went to these low-cost e-mods as a much cheaper alternative to late models. Dirt late models were especially pricey then as the crates weren't born yet and only the richest could compete.
There is another piece of history I'm not familiar with and that is those northeast dirt mods. I'm not talking about the big block mods with the sheet metal bodies. I'm talking about the ones like Bodine (the famous valiant) drove....Ray Hendrick....etc. Those things have been running in the northeast and continually evolving since those early days...I don't think they ever really died.
Dave I guess when NASCAR ran them off they went back North and stayed there until recently when they have been emerging in the South running in Vintage divisions.
Interesting topic.

I would be one of those...whatever it is...if that is what they are...if I could wave a wand and install a HOA in our neighborhood.
Dang...I didn't know I was missing all this. But, I'll chime in. Been trying for some time to get the majority of home owners in our lil neighborhood to agree to set up a HOA> The developer went bankrupt before he finished and and didn't have the HOA in place....never happened.
While I agree with the aggravation some of those in power at HOA's can cause...here in MB they are usually retirees with lots of time...and most of them are NOT southerners...if'n ya know what I mean. No offense intended to anyone...just stating the facts.
But our neighborhood NEEDS a HOA!
How the hell do we get into this discussion...oh I remember. My guess is that Todd failed to properly document what he "thought" was agreed. Need to dot the i's and cross the t's in any such agreement. Usually can't do that over a beer. The HOA guy probably caught it from every angle.
Yes, there are two ways of doing a dual firing V-8. A 180 crank & just grinding the cam's last four cyl. 180 out. Either way, you fire 2 @ once. It makes for a very different sound especially with 180 headers, but they too have to be redone slightly. Duel firing a V8 also requires a reworked electrical system. Harry Hyde said a duel firing Hemi sounded like a stick of dynamite going off with each cly report. Fun stuff, but less RPMs & slight torque gain. Definitely a short track application . I have no knowledge of Yunick doing that, but I have heard rumors, then , who hasn't?

Jim,
I heard Charlie Glotzbach talking about Smokey's car in Atlanta in the 1969 Dixie 500...I think. Charlie drove it...and led a few laps. Smokey kept bringing him into the pits and holding him up...strangely. He said he though the engine had a 180 degree crank...sounded really different. That was the first time I had heard that term and was told it had something to do with firing two cylinders at the same time.
Is that right?
Jim Reep Jr said:You ain't lived until you've had one of those engines "let go" turning near those numbers. Its nigh on to losing several years off your life. They do kill all the bugs in the immediate area however !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The remnants make for great boat anchors too !!!!!!!!! I should have saved the broken parts for 20 yrs to sell on EBay too .
