Ahhhhhh..........the plot thickens! A dadgum conspiracy, if there's ever been one! Was Saugus a NASCAR-sanctioned track? Really, don't matter if it was or not, the Daytona brain-trust knew, in 1995, that Irwindale,, the taj mahal of all Saturday night tracks (that's now a GHOST TRACK too) was on the drawing board and on the way to fame and riches and more riches. That pesky little track with the rickety bleacher has got to go...........as the Rev. Billy Ray Collins would say........."YOUdo the math......."

Great post, Dave, gotta love that 'off the beaten path' stuff. Dunn, NC is also home to the ghostly remains of the oldDunn Speedway, adjacent to I-95, and theBroadslab Speedway, still visible as a part of the modern-dayDunn-Benson Dragstrip.

Resurgence of Racing Stripes on Car Paint Schemes

Dave, my dad's first race car, a '55 chevy that was 'built' in 1964 had a racing stripe. As you mention, the stripes were popular during that era, and we painted a wide, offset, white one on the old chevy, mainly to cover a patch of burned-through roof paint (a result of roll bar welding). Although it was metallic green, our car's street paint job was pretty good, so good, we chose to just keep the car as it was.......no sense in painting it. So, our racing stripe provided both a fashion and functional statement. Later that year, our car was painted white and a classic red 3-stripe (too skinny and one wide-in-the-middle) was added. I remember them well, but honestly, I never was a big fan of the stripes.

I know Junior can walk on water, and as Junior goes, so goes NASCAR......but is having a "Celebrate Junior's win........" CMS/marketing campaign a little over the top, or what?
