Iredell Speedway

Historic Speedways and Ghost Tracks

Robert, check this out http://msrmaps.com/ this site provides aerial and topo's. In some cases, old race tracks are indicated, sometimes even labeled! I use it in conjunction w/google earth as MSR does not identify roads, streets, or highways.

Robert, I think you've found it! Great Work!! I found a 1995 topo map of the site, and it shows it as a lake. Actually it looks like it may not have been a 'continuous' lake but may be been divided into segments, thus creating the appearance of a possible figure 8 race track. Again congratulations on a great job of ghost-track-hunting.

'63 Rebel 300 Actually Twin 150-mile Races with 30 Minute Intermission - Weatherly Winner on Combined Points

Stock Car Racing History

Dave, my dad took me to this race, and it was my very first 'big track' event. I had watched the Grand Nationals the year before at Myrtle Beach, but this was Darlington! I recall that Richard Petty demolished his primary car during Thursday or Friday's practice (due to SC blue laws, the Rebel 300 was run on Saturday). The interesting part of this event was the second half. The cars were all lined up on front stretch and started the race from a dead start. The two Petty Plymouth's (Richard in the back-up #42 and Jim Paschal in the #41) won the start and dominated the race.....with Richard cruising to victory. Being a huge Petty fan, I could not believe my good fortune of Richard winning on my very first trip to Darlington...but it was special. Dad took me back to Darlington for the '64 Rebel race and I recall all the ceremonies celebrating (and eulogizing after his untimely death at Riverside) Little Joe Weatherly's Darlington career. The announcer kept repeating "and THIS was his track...and he WON the last running of this storied race.......etc. etc. etc............" All the while, I was thinking........BUT Richard won that race!

Lakeside speedway

Historic Speedways and Ghost Tracks

According to Dave's post.........."The location today would be on Church Lake Road between Highway 21 and Old Mocksville Road."

Searching Google Earth there is a small lake off of "Church Lake Road", and the faint tell-tale traces of arcing paths can be "seen" at each end of the lake. Could this be the site of the short lived, 1/2 mile Iredell Speedway?

Lakeside Speedway....a 1940's-era 3/4 mile race track near Denver, NC. Not much info on this one, other than it was near Lake Norman and is now covered by a housing development.............duh.

Pandora's Box

Current NASCAR

I understand, it's just how far off the mark the talking heads are. I'm sure those trying to solve the problem went through all the easy stuff first.....and obviously, none of it worked.

Pandora's Box

Current NASCAR

Come to find out........ NASCAR has an obscure rule (there's a surprise) requiring all cars racing in a given race to participate in the event's pre-race practice. Well, long story short, Robby Gordon missed practice at the recent Bristol race because........... his race car would not start! His race car would not start in spite of the McLaren engineers "working" on it for several hours! NASCAR wanted to be 'just like cars on the street' which are all electronically controlled, well WELCOME to the real world NASCAR! This sort of thing happens every day in the real world, I've seen it plenty of times in my 32 years of manning an auto parts counter, and you know what else?.......Lots of times because of the vehicle's total integration, everything being connected to everything...the problem can NOT be easily (if ever) detected or isolated or solved.....no matter who's working on it. It is what it is.....and it comes with the territory.
