"I'm a POT-HOLE"

Current NASCAR

GEICO ads, IMO, are among the most entertaining ever, one simple-effective-humorous-non-relatinng concept after another: the GEICO Gecko, the Cave Men (launched a sit-com didn't it?), the Waltons saying "good night", Charlie Daniels fiddling.............but a'int the GEICO "Pot-hole" the absolute timeliest NASCARtie-in (perhaps) EVER? ....."THIS is gonnna begoooood, here comes one............OH NO, did I do that???..........let me get out my cell-phone and call you a WRECKER.... (and 49 track workers w/full-face helmets on).....SHOOT.........I a'int got no cell phone.........'cause I'ma PotHole...........so.........BYE".

Mike Joy..........."TORRENTIAL rains.........caused the pot-hole" (apparently, Daytona's first)

DW.................."NOBODY is leaving........I been looking at the parking lot and nobody's leaving"

Associated Press: "'Everybody was disgusted', said 54-year old Craig Wood, who moved to the infield to watch after much of the grandstands filtered out. Wood was debating how long he would stay. He was with friend Chet Boraski, 64, but was getting hit with continuous text messages from others poking fun at the long wait. 'Hey old timer, you're going to have to take a nap to finish tis race', one read............'Guess that stimulus money hasn't come yet for Daytona' another wrote".

Just how GRIM was it? Associated Press: "Hoping for a spectacualar season-opener to re-energize the industry, the delays instead sent NASCAR chairman (little) Brian France into the broadcast booth to calm an agitiated audience............"

So............way to go DW on that objective journalism...........another great one in the books!

Question about the Beach course

Historic Speedways and Ghost Tracks

Brandon, I added the photo of the old beach course, and like you I was puzzled at the present curvature of South Atlantic avenue (A1A). I've read such exerpts as......"currently South Atlantic avenue is straight....but back in the day, it had an "S" curve............" So, I don't know, it doesn't look straight now, but I've always assumed it was and parallel to the strand. The modern aerial photo appears as if the condo-project adjacent to the old north turn is responsible for the present road's curvature. You're right, the beach course moved, primarily as a result of ever encroaching post-war developers, and increasing property values. The 'modern' course was first first used in 1948, as NASCAR's first official event, and originally had an addtional 'south' turn which reduced overall lap distance by one half. The idea was to run the stockers on the short course and the bikes on the longer 4 mile course. Presently, I've not found any evidence suggesting the stockers ever ran on anything but the long coruse.

It's FLU Season All Over Again

General

Whew! That was close.......but the winning driver HAD the flu, and just in the nick of time to save the day. With turbulent timesengulfing NASCAR-land and the traditionalmedia it's such a relief thatthe one quintessentialhallmark of a NASCAR journalist has not been lost............the winner of any N-CAR eventHAS to be suffering from the flu, or be on Intravenous fluids (via the infield care center), or distracted bysome family tragedy (regardless of genetic distance)ornursinga broken limb suffered in some "pick-up" basketball game/golf cart race (at the "shop") . Apparently it's in the N-CAR rule book.............."The winner must be the victim of a host of travils, none that he can control......but all must be OVERCOME toultimately attain victory lane" ANDsuch travialia must beduely documeted by all credential toting journalists................"

The "Bud Demo Derby" can nowsuccessfully be chronicled into the archieves. All is perfect. The winner had the flu. And he "overcame" it...........after taking IV's at the infield care center. What a comfort knowing the sky has not totally fallen..... yet!.

BREAKING NEWS! MUST READ!

General

NASCAR's NET profits droppped NINETY FIVE PER CENT (95%) from 2008 to 2009. In addition to all this dog-and-pony-show Danica Patrick hype.....the family knows its in trouble. That outfit ain't used to measly 6-million dollar per year allowance. Birth-rite notwithstanding, they may be looking elsewhere. Go Humpy! Tim Leeming said:
Without a doubt, Humpy should be the first and only choice to step up. However, as Jeff pointed out, NASCAR is a family business in spite of its efforts to project itself as a corporation. Humpy has already been shot by one "family" in Charlotte. As was already stated, with the lawyers NASCAR has around, any "gag" order or any other contract should be able to be overturned. There are always, it seems, loop holes for the smart ones. I guess first of all, we need to see if this is true or just a "silly season" rumor. It is a little early for silly season though. Wonder if I could get in trouble for my blood pressure drugs? Guess not, a doctor prescribes those. But wait!!!!! Michael Jackson's drugs were all prescribed too. What to do, what to do???? Oh, no, I think I need some Valium!!!!

BREAKING NEWS! MUST READ!

General

Humpy is the BEST one for the job. Don't know how much longer his gag order will be in effect, Jeff Gilder said:
My thoughts exactly, Slim...Hmmmmmmm. If lil Brian is out...maybe this could be another place to start the Humpy rumor. Remember Indy?

NASCAR: Outside the box

Current NASCAR

Other than tradition, what's special about 500 continuous miles/laps? Could NASCAR increase interest by changing their format to somethin akin to the 'All Star' Race? A"race" could consist of aseries of shorter races, long enough to include a pit stop, but short enough to mandate hard charging. Fields could be inverted andvarious other entertainmentehnhancing quirks could be thrown in.The overall winner could be awarded to the driver with the best overall finish.........and while on the subject of being too long, what about the season as a whole?Does theFebruary to November schedule, coupled with constant "SPEED" network TV racing shows promote burn-out, or interest?
