Danica Unveils New Belt Buckle; BIGGER Than Mine!

Current NASCAR

Fellow RR member (but who rarely posts), Brian 200WINZ Hauck is the proud owner of a limited edition Richard Petty belt buckle. The King had them made following his 7th championship in 1979, and he gave them to a few selective individuals. Turns out Brian ended up with one of them.

An oversized belt buckle ... with tennis shoes. Yep, a regular cowpoke she is. *spit*

"Not Easy to Take Out Other Cars," Says Danica

Current NASCAR

Oh my. "It was great that Tony picked the difficult races, because it got them out of the way..."

This just in dear. The difficult races are held EVERY YEAR. You think the next time at Darlington, Charlotte, Bristol, or Richmond will be much easier than your first trip ... or your last trip as is the case for many drivers? Ask someone like Kyle Petty who wanted Darlington filled and stock with bass because he struggled it so mightily. Good grief, you just don't get it.

Hope she enjoys 2013 because it won't surprise me to see her out of Cup in 2014 - maybe a move to something like Grand Am / ALMS.

65 Years of Martinsville Speedway Exhibit Opens - Ray Hendrick & Richard Petty Items Displayed

Stock Car Racing History

A few days ago, I finally got around to blogging about a song I shared here several weeks ago: Massey's Run. Doug Williams, the songwriter, tells the story of Richard Petty's win in the 1960 Virginia 500 at Martinsville. Since I originally learned of the song, I've corresponded a good bit with Doug. For the moment, the song is simply a live number. They are trying to raise funds to hire the studio help they need and want to make a new album a reality. Read more and listen here:

As for a Martinsville museum - including a King exhibit, well count me in. I'm drooling baby.

NASCAR's 50 Greatest Drivers Appear in Unusual Place on TV

Stock Car Racing History

DF - PKL - Cop outs! Ha ha.

That's the beauty of this forum. Make up our own rules. Kind of like RR's own version of NASCAR's oft-invoked EIRI. Didn't say it was going to be easy. :-)

NASCAR's 50 Greatest Drivers Appear in Unusual Place on TV

Stock Car Racing History

Pretty cool. This reply might need to be separate forum post, but here goes anyway. The list of NASCAR's Fifty Greatest Drivers was released in 1998. I'm curious who from 1998 through today could displace someone on that original list.

I was going to suggest Jeff Gordon from the jump - until I realized he made the cut back then. What? He was only in his 5th season!! OK, so on I go. Three shoo-ins for me are:

  • Jimmie Johnson
  • Matt Kenseth
  • Tony Stewart

On the fence are:

  • Kevin Harvick
  • Kyle Busch
  • Jeff Burton
  • Ahhhhh Kurt Busch ... there I said. Kyle still has some upside. I think Kurt's goose is cooked.

But if any of these guys make the cut, who has to fall off the Top 50?

  • Neil Bonnett?
  • Davey Allison because of career brevity?
  • A.J. Foyt because of limited starts in NASCAR?
  • Tiny Lund? Ehh, not sure. Influence wasn't in Cup as much - but it was in other NASCAR series.

Disappointing TV option

Stock Car Racing History

Was surfing through Comcast TV listings tonight when I stumbled across this option. Imagine my surprise when it was some band called Stone Temple Pilots instead of Andy Granatelli introducing Richard Petty in January 1972. Oh well...

Goodnight, Old Dominion Speedway; May Re-open in 2014 in New Location on I-95

Local and Regional Short Track Racing

The King had two wins at Old Dominion - the first in 1963 and the second in 1965.

Though brief and without much detail, here is my blog entry about RP's 1963 win:

http://bench-racing.blogspot.com/2012/05/may-18-this-day-in-petty-history.html

His 1965 victory was one of two Petty wins that I was unable to find any meaningful information. Please contact me if you have any articles, photos, program cover, ticket stub, memories, etc. you could share about Richard's win on September 17, 1965.
