SKYLAND 200

Weaverville, NC. August 17, 1968

The 15th Grand Touring race of 1968 was held at Asheville-Weaverville Speedway. A 1/2 mile paved oval. Tiny Lund put his Bud Moore Cougar on the pole with a time of 20.67 seconds and led the first 87 laps until the throttle linkage broke costing him to lose 6 laps in the pits for repairs. Lund would return to action and make a charge to the front but would eventually fall 1 1/2 laps short of Donnie Allisons Mustang who led laps 88 thru 200. It was the 5 th win of the season for Allison whose car had been qualified by his brother Bobby on Friday as Donnie had a modified race in Birmingham, which he also won. Bobby went on to finish 3 rd in a 68 Camaro. I dont know for sure but it could have been Stan Starrs car as he would later drive the #9 at Darlington. There were only two cautions for a total of 11 laps. The first was on lap 8 when Buck Baker blew an engine in turn 4 and the last was on lap 116 when Jack Ryans Porsche lost its right rear wheel . Twenty cars started the race with 15 running at the finish but I dont have a complete run down. Marty Robbins drove a 66 Dodge Dart in the event but I dont know where he finished. The crowd was estimated at 2,500 and the purse was $5,625 with Donnie getting $1,100 of it.

Buck Baker still held the point lead but his engine problems allowed Lund to pull from 3 rd to second only 11 points behind Baker.

After the race Bud Moore was asked how much the broken throttle linkage cost. Having overheard the question Mario Rossi pulled a nickel from his pocket and gave it to the reporter. Moore agreed, thats about right.

Irish Hills, Mich. August 16, 1969

The 24 th Grand Touring race of 1969 was held at the Michigan International Speedway, a 2 mile paved superspeedway. Jim Paschal started on the pole and led the first 33 laps before Tiny Lund led the next 6 laps. Paschal went back out front on lap 41 but had engine failure on the 54 th lap that ended his day. Ken Rush then led his first laps of the day thru lap 65 when Phil Kendrick would lead 9 laps. From there it was Rush and Pete Hamilton swapping the lead. Hamilton had clocked the fastest qualifying lap but it was on the second day of qualifying. Rush led laps 76 thru 87, then Hamilton led laps 88 and 89. Rush went back out front for 2 laps then Hamilton led laps 93 thru 102 when he starting experiencing engine trouble. Rush would regain the lead and led laps 103 thru 125 to score his second victory of the year. The win also gave Ken the point lead over Frank Sessoms.

There were 6 cautions for 35 laps and only 11 of the 33 starters were running at the finish. Three cars were start and park entries. Twelve experienced engine failure with C. B. Gwyns engine letting go before he completed a lap. Wayne Andrews was credited with 34 th position as his engine popped in practice so he did not make the race.

GT 200

Maryville, Tn. Aug. 10, 1968

The 14th Grand Touring race of 1968 was held at Smoky Mountain Raceway. A 1/2 mile paved oval. The event was scheduled for Friday the 9 th but was postponed to Saturday due to rain. Donnie Allison sat on the pole with a lap time of 21.1 seconds but wound up second to Tiny Lund who made it two in a row and number 6 win for the year. Buck Baker would hold onto the point lead with a 3 rd place finish and his 9 th top ten of the year. The lap count of 177 would suggest they never got to the scheduled 200 laps. Dont know if the reason was for rain, a curfew or some other reason.

Dont know what race this is from but it appears whoever is in the #15 is getting a push from Tiny with Donnie looking to the inside.
