This day in 1970 - May 24, 1970
Stock Car Racing History
Correction, May 24th.
Sorry for the typo.
While reading post in Tracks Gone But Not Forgotten I can across New Bremen (Ohio) Speedway by Dave Kramer where he gave the results of a USAC race there in 1970. As a matter of fact it was this very day, May 25, and it made me think of the series that Tim Leeming is doing and with the winner being on our minds lately, I thought I would share it. I don't think Tim will mind a USAC race along side his NASCAR results for today.

Dick Trickle won from the pole in this 100 lap event that was noted as his first USAC win. Folks from the south who read Stock Car Racing magazine back then will recognize a lot of the names in this race.
The one that jumps out at me is the is the 5th place finisher and 1970 USAC ROTY Billy Ries, not because of Stock Car Racing coverage of USAC but because of a trip he made south.
In February 1971 Billy Ries brought a Camaro to Daytona for the Grand American Citrus 250 and won.
Congratulations to all the new inductees. Just got to say Congratulations to Frances Flock, her hard work has finally paid off, she has been tireless in her promotion of her husband.
Found this in the Gadsden Times.
Thanks Dave, As you can imagine I always like seeing stories about the Grand American series. I have no pictures to contribute but I can share what dad told me about his experience in the Lanier 250.
For reasons not remembered they got there late and got no practice. First time on the track was for qualifying. Having never seen the track Dad had gone to Paschal to inquire about getting around the place. His response, "Pull that jock strap tight and don't lift under the bridge." Dad can't remember where he qualified but did say "I lifted under the bridge!"
The clutch came out in the first 50 lapper and he tore the transmission up trying to finish with no clutch. Said he didn't think he made the second 50 laps.
Dad did remember the disappointment of Bud Moore being there to see him run and as he put it "Got there late and it went down hill from there."
That's racing.
Billy, Dad has always said that one of the best things about racing is the people that you meet and it struck me how many people were named in this post. Several Hall of Famers and all a big part of stock car racing history. Including the article Dave linked here is a quick review of those people.
Warren Prout
Richard Petty
Donnie Allison
Jim Paschal
Max Barrier
Bill Blair
Bobby Allison
Ron Sturla
Ronnie Hopkins
Tex Powell
Cliff Stewart
Dave Fulton
Tim Leeming
Billy Biscoe
Buck Baker
Tiny Lund
Wayne Andrews
Gene Felton
Bob Glass
Lloyd Ruby
Bud Moore
I count myself very fortunate to have known or at least met most all of these men.
Two Grand American memories in the same day!
Got some research to do, don't recall Mr. Sturla and his Barracuda. Let you know what I find.
I had forgotten that Shawna drove the Big Rigs.
I don't know if he will go in this time or not, never been good at predicting these things. But Richard is right, his record speaks for itself. Richard, Maurice and Dale were quite a team, you just can't talk about one without talking about the other two. It would only be a guess but I think together they were better together than they would have been apart.
Thanks Dave. Littlejohn is one of those names you seldom hear but tend to remember.
