A RACE FROM WAY BACK FROM BEVERLY HILLS CA. Maybe 1920

Stock Car Racing History

The board track era started Los Angeles in 1910; a location I know as Playa del Rey. A velodrome designer was commissioned to create the first autrodrome; a steeply banked ovals track whose racing surface was created with millions of 2X4s laid on end. 100 mile per hour laps were predicted at a time when Indy was still in the 80s. The track was short lived; catching fire in 1913, but the groundwork for the next big think in motor racing had been created. John Prince, the initial designer of the track, would create the Prince Speedway Company and go on to build some 15 more tracks of various configurations. ISCSMI anyone?!?

Many tracks entwined in ancient history were board tracks for their whole life, or at some point in the locations history. Uniontown, Brooklyn, Altoona and many more were all known for their breathtaking races. New Jersey, a short 1/8 mile oval with 45 degree banking and eight second laps, was one of the most fearsome examples. During the non championship year of 1915, the first championship level board track race was held at Tacoma Speedway. A five turn track with every other board removed and gravel place into the voids to save some cash. Track historian Wayne Herstad said There was a saying that all board tracks were awful, and then there was Tacoma.

Arguably the most famous example was the Beverly Hills Speedway. The 1.25 mile rectangle has 35 degree banking in the corners; tame considering Culver City claimed 60 degrees at their track. During the season ending race in 1920, that years 500 winner Gaston Chevrolet was killed along with two others. Gaston would posthumously win the 1920 championship but would not be the only 500 winner to perish at a board track the same year as their victory. Howdy Wilcox in 1923, and Ray Keech in 1929, both at Altoona Speedway.

A RACE FROM WAY BACK FROM BEVERLY HILLS CA. Maybe 1920

Stock Car Racing History

Yall been getting to relaxed with your posts on maybe stuff, here is how it was,I mean really was wayyyy back in the Board days. These guys blistered the Walnuts out of the boards, but only for 10 years. By1930 the building boom started taking effect. But for those 10 years they had a blast.

A RACE FROM WAY BACK FROM BEVERLY HILLS CA. Maybe 1920

Stock Car Racing History

Get your Ticks early

Hot laps prior to the time trials

Prerace activities

Tony Stewart maybe?

Repairing the track for todays race

Waiting for the gates to open

And last weeks winner

How about a trophy dash

Time Trials old fashioned Style

Three wide on the front stretch

A crowd drawing runner of the Day

A little preliminary racing to draw a crowd

People coming from all points to watch the race

How about a cool looking track such as this

Kevin Harvick ?

These cars all look alike at least on the west coast

Let's Buy a 1-1/4 Mile Dirt Track

General

Eric, a Sprint car on a flat track? with over, way over a quarter mile straights? and you would have to back a car into the turn to even navigate it starting just after the flagstand. O wait thats how they do it in Syracuse but its only a mile . I can only imagine the thrill of backing into a corner there with no wing.

Now as far as spectators go that grandstand would be a winner even in the chilly spring or fall OR the dead heat of the summer.

The garage area, would it be in stalls?

Now how about full bady vehicles? You see the trucks at Eldora, now imagine that at Virginia Horsetrack.

Yup I can see Bobby in that 300 hanging it out to dry or The mighty Bill Tripp and the 6 pac to go screaming down that back stretch. Even the Bell n Bell #39 hang ten on the far turn coming to the flag.

Or the quiet spoken black 40 Ford #2 of Bill Blair giving chase to another healthy Flathead like maybe David Pearsons neat flathead sedan.

Hey Dave you could work your PR magic there and have a heck of a blowout, just think no jeans or cigarettes, just good ol;d time fun -- Now that will sell!!!

AND IN THIS CORNER YOU HAVE ----------- WHO?

General

I thought Saturday nite at the fights was on another channel but-------- the score card is scratchy and the players are many but the ultimate winners were the handlers of each player. This goes to show that there is still fire in the Nascar crowd. But the way its playing out should not involve using the cars.. Rather let them squre off in a confined area where words or necessary roughness can be controlled. Brad got ahead of himself I think, picking on Matt seems the wrong thing to do, and Denny was prepared to go for it. Only one i see who used their head after getting the ok (kinda) was Danica. And Tony, well you dont hit Tony while he is undressing..

Now with Kevin winning he has a round three spot in the chase.

Matt got penalized for a decal being removed from his car before the race,so starting in the rear now puts him in jeapordy .

Joey spins Danica out for why?? is he jealous of Ricky? he better be glad she didnt follow through with that swing of her purse..

And Jr and his shifter, that boy better shape up or his vacation may start a little early..

Now for the 64 dollar question - - whats with Nascar and the broadcasting of the race,I admit the Baylor game was a thriller but Guys in the tower, get your head on , best way to loose ratings is have these no shows and im talking about broadcasting . I hunted it on all the PROPER channels and then resorted to the pirate channels but nothing there so it was a network thing that Nascar did not solidify beforehand..

Sponsors want to be seen not just thought about ....I think this hurt our sport last night------ What do you think ???????

THE CHARLOTTE POLE KEEPS GETTING HIGHER

Stock Car Racing History

Kyle Busch was the surprise pole winner for Saturday night's Bank of America 500, as the Charlotte Motor Speedway track record was obliterated in a wave of speed.

Busch's No. 18 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota was the most consistent of the cars over three rounds, as he ran 197.390 miles per hour in the final session to take his third pole of the year.
