What Can YOU Tell Me About the Nascar Roadster Division???

General

Thanks PattyKay and Robbie, but I don't think you understand what I'm trying to find here. The Speedway division started in 1952 which was much like an Indy car, but using American motors sponsored by american cars and some strictly stock drivers competed in them. The Roadster division was started in 1948, and that's all I know.

A Roadster looks like this

or like this (The gray one)

Or even like this

The Speedway Division had cars like these.....

And this

Iappreciateyourinput, but we're talking about two entirely different things.

What Can YOU Tell Me About the Nascar Roadster Division???

General

This past week, I was re-reading my favorite book, 'Driving with the Devil', which in my opinion, tells the TRUE story that Nascar doesn't want you to know, of how it was started by a bootlegging self-made millionaire, a greasy mechanic named Red, who loved engines more than anything, and 23 other men. It tells the real stories about Bill France and how he begged Mr. Raymond Parks to come in on his deal, because otherwise if he didn't, I wouldn't be here telling you about the history of Nascar, because if not for Raymond Parks, there probably wouldn't be a Nascar as we know it.

Anyway, while half-way through the book, focusing on the first year of Nascar, it states that France wanted three classes in 48' - the Modifieds, Strictly Stock, and the Roadster division. But in 1948, many automobile manufactures didn't have much different models from before the war. So the Strictly Stocks was put off till' 1949 when everyone came out with what I call a 'full-fendered' car. In 49, they still had the modified division which was still very popular.

But what I would like to know today, is everything anyone knows about the roadster division. Besides racing, one of my hobbies include old hot rods from pre and post war. That includes roadsters, there's nothing better than a Model A roadster with a flathead. I've seen a couple of pictures of roadster stock cars, in fact Lloyd Seay won the 1941 Championship on Labor Day of 41' driving a 34' Ford roadster, #13. I do know that roadster racing dates back to the early Bonneville Salt Flat days, and from what I hear, that's what really hurt Nascar's version of the series because it was a "Yankee Thing", but mainly out west, like I said, Bonneville. So does anyone know how long it lasted and is there any pictures floating around out there that features them?

Thanks for any help

-Cody

They may be great Dave, but think our own folks here at Racers Reunion are some of the best too. Between your's, Legend's, and Jeff's among dozens of others, everyone always contributes something great!

My Racing "Treasure" / How About Yours?

General

Even though a have a collection of mostly 1/64 scale cars (don't collect them no more) at my house. I have a much bigger collection. As most of ya'll know, I volunteer at the Georgia Racing Hall of Fame as a tour guide/historian. I am there almost every weekend if some sort of racing event is not that day and most days after school. Even though I have very few pieces on display to the museum, just seeing all the historic items several times a day still gets me excited. And I love to tell and teach people about every little thing that's in thatmuseum. So like I said, even though I don't own that much, I just like the to think that the museum it self is part of my collection. I just love everything in that museum, every car, every photo, trophy, uniform, article, signs, just everything. It's just my life, and I know I keep saying it, but I think I have quite a unique collection.

But to answer Dave's question about MY prized possession. I really couldn't think of one, I mean I have a shadow box in my room on my wall of my personally autographed Tony Stewart Home Depot Jacket and a framed photo with his and Denny Hamlin's tire pieces, both autographed. But probably, more than the autographed Richard Petty championship cars, and more than my copy of Bill Elliott's sports illistrated, and maybe even more than anything else is my autograph book. I went to the Ford South Show that was in Cumming Ga, where I used to live about 10 miles from Dawsonville, anyway, there were tons of old drivers there and I didn't have anything for autographs. So that night, my mother ran to the dollar store and bought me a leather journal/notebook that I use for autographs. I have everyone from local drivers to current Nascar to old Nascar to old Drag Racing. Every one from Glen & Leonard Wood, to all three Elliott Brothers, to Bobby Allison, to Raymond Parks (three times) to David Reutimann, David Ragan, Micheal Waltrip, Sam McQuagg, Hubert Platt, Phil Bonner, Linda Vaughn, and of course Richard Petty (I told him he could have a whole page, and he did) plus tons more. It's not even half-full (but close) I've also got every living member to our Georgia Racing Hall of Fame, and some family. I take that book to every racing function/race I go to. I don't know what I'd do if I lost it. I just means so much to me.

Well the thing is with Tony. He is a racer, not really a spokesperson. I've met him before and was nice, but I met a guy once that came through the GRHOF one time that races midgets with him and knew him, he told me that he just does not like to sign autographs. He just wants to focus on racing.
