Today vs Yesteryear and why

General

My answer to media saturation is not to watch the pre race although Race Hub does a real nice post race review. Concerning how we think about the drivers I think most of it has to do with the era of our impression or in other words, what we experience at a young age. What we see and do during childhood is what sticks with us for life.

I was 13 years old in 1975 and seeing Petty, Pearson, Yarborough and others at Doverhas stuck with me to this day. Nothing compares. But the best for me these days is seeing driver interviews after a race. Love it !

Did you ever see Richard Petty win in person?

General

I have was never able to see Richard win a race but met him twice. We went to Dover in 1986 andwere in the infield. It was 105" that day and there wasno air getting into the speedway. After the race finished we crawled under the garage fence and walked through. There was only one driver in the paddock and the was Richard. He managed a 6th place finish after over 4 hours of Dover's asphalt. You could tell that he was burned up. Petty had a can of COKE that was being used for mouth wash or at least I did not see him drink any.

There were no other drivers to be seen other than catching a glimpse of Buddy Arrington in his penny lofers. As always The King stayed till no one else wanted an autograph.. I may have not seen Richard win a race but I have met a winner.

Stock Car Racing History

A rare double post

I remember sitting down in fromt of the TV to watch the 1990 or so Firecracker 400 ....Being a Petty fan I was excited becasue Richard was starting near to front. To my dismay a major incident took place at the beginning of this race taking out Petty among many others.

After the big wreck Richard was interviewed in the garage.Petty stated that something happened and we ground it out on the front stretch wall. With his classic smile he said that we will see you next week.

Heck I knew who was going to win this one before it even started. Blew me away when Tim said that there was not one pass for the lead during green flag racing ....

I tried really hard to stay awake during this one...since it was an inaugural race and all. Couldn't do it. I was asleep within a very few laps. As a matter of fact, just thinking about it makes me sleepy.

Happy Birthday to King Richard

Current NASCAR

Losing Glenn Roberts was sad as he was getting ready to retire and marry or was just married. He was also one of Richard Petty's good friends.

Robbie, you put that in clear terms ........

Well Tim, from what I've learned from a BBC series i'vebeen watchingon how this planet was formed and the critters that were here long before us, weather patterns shift- and in a drastic manner. Weather shifts extinted 80% of all life on earth at least twice and onewasduring the age of man. In which after all was said anddone, only a few small pocket of humans ineast centralAfrica and north east Europe survived. Estimates vary from less than 10k to 15k people remained on Earth. Just think of the infieldat some racetracks and imagine that as the entire population of the planet. Also thesurface area of this planet that is paved over, the size of most ciities and concentration, andconsideringheat retention properties of stone, tar, steel, and glass.Drive around town tonight and then head out past Chapin and notice the diffence. Oh, andplanetary systems are eventually consumed by their own sun as their obrits shortenwith eachpassing year. Sweet dreams everyone. On the blocking thing anytime you fight over limited space on a racetrack it ends badly if you force the issueand the most likely person to comeout on the losing end wil be yourself. I can cite many personal experiences.
