Now you have to admit, either these drivers were totally FEARLESS or just didn't have any sense. Whatever, I wonder if the fans actually appreciated this bravado? Also, some say the late Bill France once considered building a speedway here before he went to Florida...

It's possible that the photo is of Peter De Paolo, 1925 Indy 500, drove a #12. I'll have to look at other photos to be certain.
