Photographs Needed: Augusta "510"
The Augusta International Raceway Preservation Society (AIRPS) badly needs any photographs taken before, during or after the "Augusta 510" that took place on November 17, 1963 on the high banked road circuit here in Augusta. The organization has NONE from this event other than one of Glenn "Fireball" Roberts sitting on pit lane.If you have any please let me know. They can be displayed here, if OK for copying, or sent to me for scanning and then returned to the owner. We simply do not want photographic evidence of this event to pass into history.Plus they will eventually be displayed in a section of the Diamond Lakes Library that has been constructed next to the former pit lane. Our group currently has a display case in the lobby of the library.Henry
Thanks Tim.AIRPS has a couple of the original programs from the "510" and a plat of the track plus a program of the only other race at the 3 mile facility, the USRRC road race event on March 1, 1964 and that is about it. Sad, very sad that little is recorded.I sometimes wonder how many photographs have been destroyed through the years by individuals not knowing what was being viewed. And, I also wonder where that box of photographs is currently located that will unlock many, many memories of a track that could have been.Modern day fans do not understand that back in the day NASCAR was racing anywhere and everywhere including stadiums and parking lots. The developers here in Augusta (along with Fireball Roberts) were betting that the future of NASCAR was road racing because of the success of Riverside and built this monster facility in the little Army town of Augusta. Fireball died eight months later and the deal was over. Thanks goodness the 3 mile monster is still with us.Any help on photographs will be appreciated.Henry
