HOW A LOW BUDGET GN TEAM SAVED $ MONEY $

Every Grand National Car that started the race received a certain amount of money just for completing the first lap of the race. Bill Champion's engine builder once told me that they would wrap a steel wire around the oil line and tie the other end of the wire under the dash. "Champ" would complete the first lap and then switch his engine off, then yank the wire from under the dash spilling oil all over the track. The race annoucer would come over the public address system and annouce "Bill Champion has just blown another engine between the first and second turn."Of course his engine was fine and he collected his money for starting the race.

Now you're on a roll, Jack. Those are stories we all want to hear. Thanks You! I think we may see some start and park runs this year in cup. How about you?

I got you beat on that one. Back in the sixties they were running the "Northern Tour" with the GN schedule including races way above the Mason Dixon line. IIRC Crawfish Crider had blown the engine in one of this cars the night before so it was just sitting in the pits whe they started counting the cars that were getting ready for the race (maybe Islip) and there was room for one more in the advertised starting lineup. The crew grabbed a wrench and wound down the front screw jacks to level the car with no engine and pushed it out to the lineup. After pushing the car around for the start with his other car and making one lap, he rolled into the pits and made a big deal about trying to get the car running but after a few minutes of theatrics they pushed the car back to their pit area and walked on down to the pay window to get ready to collect the "tow" money and get ready to go to the next race,
