Ford struggled with their '62 Galaxies on the superspeedways because of the boxy roof lines. While managing to register wins at both Charlotte and Darlington with the "boxtop" cars it was Lorenzen's win at the rain shortened Atlanta 500 that previewed the answer to their problem. By welding a '61 Starliner roof to a '62 Sunliner convertible, the sleek Starlift was born. Conceived as a convertible with a lift off hardtop it managed to win the race and get banned, all in the same weekend. But Ford had learned something about aerodynamics that would make the '63 season a very good one for the Blue Oval boys.Fred Lorenzen took the new "Sportsroof" design to victory in the season's longest race, the World 600, on his way to becoming the first stock car driver to win over $100,000 in a single season. Here's his Holman Moody ride for that record setting season.
Also in a new Fastback Ford for '63 was Rebel 300, World 600 and Southern 500 winner Nelson Stacy.
Getting one of Curtis Turner's hand me down USAC Fords, Wendell Scott was another Fastback driver wheeling this bright red Fastback in the '64 season.
The "Big M" division for FoMoCo wasn't left out of the fastback frenzy as Joe Weatherly rolled this new Mercury Marauder to his second consecutive championship season running out of Bud Moore's Spartanbug shops. Sadly, he was lost the next season at Riverside CA while chasing a third championship.
