The first and only track in the late 40s was Occoneechee Speedway at Hillsboro (sp) NC. The Drivers and Cars were mostly from Up North, Atlanta Ga, Western Va & NC.There were no drivers from Eastern NC until early 50s and most of the were poor inexperienced mechanics (in racing) and drivers. In the early 50s Tracks started being built around the Eastern part of the state. Henderson, Franklinton, Erwin, Dunn and of course the Wilson Fairgrounds. Some of these tracks banded together and formed the Dixie Sortman Circuit. This was mostly Limited Sportsman (under 300 ci) Cars. Not many of the Top Drivers drove at these tracks. They were on step ahead of Amateurs, but not in the Class of Joe Weatherly, Lee Petty, Buck Baker, Cotton Owens and Ray Hendricks. My next Blog will be about being one of these poor drivers.
