Tag Team
No this isn't about Pro Wrestling. Back in the early 50s most Sportsman (anything you can't see) Features were between 30 and 50 laps. This was because the old 37/39 Flathead Fords couldn't last any longer.Big Bill France was one of the best promoters there ever has been. He came up with the Tag Team Stock Car Race.It consisted of 200 Laps raced by a Tag Team of a Sportsman and an Amateur car. The Amateur was required to run at least 10 laps. I drove in the Amateur Division in 50 and 51.Curtis Turner had just won the Grand National in Charlotte the week before and I was lucky enough to get Teamed with him. I was already to spend my part (20%) of $250.00 .Fireball sat on the pole with Curtis on the outside. For the first 10 laps they ran one, two then Fireball had a tire go down. Pops (CT) took over and I relaxed. About 10 laps later my teammate's engine let go.175 laps later ( I was 5 laps behind) I pulled off the track dead tired.By the way I got 40% of 20% of $10.00. You do the math.
Great story, Jim!!! Keep 'em coming!Jeff
