@dave-fulton11 years ago This was the first race Dale Earnhardt ever drove for Richard Childress. That's Earnhardt in the blue & yellow #3 and Joe Ruttman in Earnhardt's former Jim Stacy #2. Stacy purchased the team from Rod Osterlund in July 1981. I paid Stacy $10,000 on pit road that August 1981 Michigan weekend for changing the paint scheme to eliminate the striped chevron so that the #3 and #2 didn't look like team cars... but they still almost did, since Stacy kept our blue & yellow Wrangler colors and stylized door and roof number.

Below are two John Betts photos posted previously showing the first outing of Earnhardt and Childress in the RCR #3 Wrangler Pontiac at Michigan in August 1981 and the #2 Jim Stacy Pontiac with its new paint scheme and Joe Ruttman behind the wheel in the first race (at MIS Aug 1981) after Earnhardt and Wrangler left Stacy and joined RCR.
